Did you know that along with plants, there are smells and foods that will help repel mosquitoes?

Here are some that make repelling mosquitos more pleasurable.
Lavender, citronella, clove, peppermint, basil, cedarwood, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemongrass and rosemary.

They also hate grapefuit and chili peppers if you want to eat some of those to make yourself less attractive to them.

Louisiana is home to around 60 mosquito species, with their populations fluctuating based on seasonal conditions. In 2024, many believe that the summer drought followed by early spring rain contributed to an increased mosquito population:

Drought: Mosquitoes lay their eggs above water lines in summer, anticipating later rainfall for hatching. The dry summer of 2023 may have preserved more eggs, as they can survive over a year. Additionally, the drought may have cracked the soil, providing more egg-laying spaces.

Rainfall: The rains in late November 2023 rehydrated mosquito eggs, enabling them to hatch in early spring. This resurgence allowed many eggs that had dried out during the drought to finally develop.

Have you ever wondered what plants will help repel mosquitoes?
Do you want to make sure your patio or other frequently used outdoor space is as protected as possible from mosquitoes? Here are a few plants that you can complement our services with that make your yard as a whole less hospitable to these insects. For example, we can advise you on draining areas of standing water, pruning overgrowth, and even growing plants whose aromas act as a deterrent to mosquitoes.

Here are some of the plants you may want to consider integrating into your landscape or placing in planters around your patio:

Catmint- Does your cat love catnip? This plant is actually a w**d and is also known under the name of catmint. In addition to using it for the purpose of entertaining your cat, you can also grow it in your yard as its scent repels mosquitoes.

Marigolds - Do you love the bright color of marigolds? Planting these in pots can not only bring a lively burst of color to your family's outdoor living area, but can also help deter mosquitoes thanks to their aroma.

Lavender - The scent of lavender is appreciated by humans, but may actually diminish mosquitoes' ability to smell. Take advantage of this quirk by planting lavender in your garden!

Citronella - You don't have to buy mosquito-deterring citronella candles from the store when you grow this plant in a large planter or sunny spot in your yard!

Summertime, and the living is... ITCHY!

Summer means mosquitos! Not only are their bites itchy and annoying, but they can also spread diseases like West Nile, Zika, and Malaria. When mosquitos bite, their saliva causes those itchy red bumps.

In the warm, wet weather of the southern U.S., especially in Louisiana, be extra cautious to protect yourself from these pests. Stay safe and itch-free!
