Winter doesn't break things all at once. It finds the weak spot you ignored in October.

Rot hides where you don't look. That bottom rail on a window sash can look fine from across the room — push on it, and if the wood is soft or crumbly, rot is already in. Water gets behind the trim and eats the frame from the inside out, and by the time you feel the draft, it's been going for a while.

Before winter sets in, push the bottom rail and feel around the frame for cold air. Catching it now beats replacing the whole unit later.
