Power came back, but your AC didn’t?

Don’t panic, and don’t keep turning the system on and off.

After a power outage, an AC may not restart because of a tripped breaker, a blown fuse, a safety switch, or an electrical component affected by the outage or surge.

Start with the basics:

Check your thermostat settings
Check the AC breaker
Give the system a few minutes to restart

Some systems have a built-in delay before turning back on.

Does your AC smell like something is burning?

How long should an AC run during a normal cooling cycle?

Many air conditioners may run around 15–20 minutes per cooling cycle, but actual run time varies depending on outdoor temperature, humidity, insulation, ductwork, thermostat settings, and system size.

Here in South Florida, longer cooling cycles can be normal during periods of extreme heat, especially during the afternoon.

Possible causes can include airflow restrictions, a dirty filter, refrigerant issues, duct leaks, or system sizing problems.
