Pavement ants are becoming extremely active throughout the Treasure Valley with this warm weather.

Pavement ants commonly nest under sidewalks, driveways, patios, and slabs. As they excavate soil to create nests and tunnels (sometimes spanning several square yards), they:
• Push dirt up through cracks, creating unsightly mounds or piles.
• Potentially cause crumbling, uneven surfaces, shifting, or widening of existing cracks over time.
• Undermine stability in some cases, which may lead to settling in paver patios or walkways (though major sinking of solid concrete driveways is uncommon).

The warmer weather is here to trigger rat breeding season again. This is the time of year where sightings of rats in yards, gardens, and around structures happen. When this reproduction ramps up, it will lead to potential explosions in numbers later in the year -particularly in crawlspaces and inside structures during the fall and winter months.

Check out this video of odorous house ants pouring out of an electrical outlet in a customer’s home. These tiny invaders love warm, protected spots like wall voids, and can even come out of through electrical outlets, including smoke detectors.

One of our new customers woke up in the middle of the night to her smoke alarm blaring. Thinking it might be a fire, she immediately called the fire department. When the firefighters inspected the smoke detector, they removed the cover -and hundreds of odorous house ants came tumbling out! These ants had taken up residence in her attic and were coming out through her smoke detector causing it to trigger a false alarm.

Odorous house ants are one of the most common and frustrating household ants. They get their name from the strong, rotten coconut-like odor they release when crushed. They can establish nests almost anywhere in your home — behind baseboards, near pipes, in wall voids, inside appliances, in potted plants, and yes, even in your electrical systems.

Because they form multiple sub-colonies with many queens and move their nests frequently, they can become very stubborn to control if the entire home isn’t properly treated and if access to hidden nesting areas is limited.

Homeowner cooperation with providing access and following exclusion recommendations makes a huge difference in getting long-term results.
