Hurricane Season is Approaching
Here are 6 ways to prepare for a hurricane NOW

1. Evacuation Plan
2. Buy supplies- buy them in advance and keep them on head. Don't wait till the last minutes as supplies quickly vanish off the shelves
3. Check insurance coverage- do you have flood insurance? Your homeowner's insurance does not cover flood damage.
4. Make copies of important documents- keep them in a hurricane kit or in a safe place that does not risk being damaged during the hurricane
5. Protect your home- inspect your home to confirm that there is no damage that a hurricane could increase
6. Back up electronics- consider storing your data off-site so that you can recover it if something were to happen to the physical computer or storage device during a hurricane

It's that time again to clean up the house and garage. So put on those old clothes and get out your cleaning materials.

These 5 easy cleaning tips will help you make your house feel like brand new again.

1. The early bird catches the worm

A big clean up means you really clean everything. Every hole and corner in the house get its turn. With all your furniture and accessories in the way, it’s better to make room in your house first.

2. Divide and Conquer

Of course you want to clean the whole house and garage at once, but that would be too much at once.

You start to rush the clean up, since you’re running out of time. That way, you end up cleaning everything poorly, which is a waste of time.

Divide your house in sections, like ground floor, first floor, garden, garage etc.

It’s important not to forget the garden, furniture and garage since it will be summer soon and you will be spending a lot of time outside.

Start from the inside out and work from the top to the bottom or else you will be dragging all the stuff from upstairs over your cleaned floor afterwards.

3. Make a list of the stuff you want to keep, throw away or store somewhere else

Make a list of the stuff you want to keep, throw away or store somewhere else, in order to clean up the house and free up space, designed for living.

That old surfboard and drums are taking up too much space in the garage for years, which was designed as a garage, not as a messy storage place.

Free up room by either giving it away, selling it, or store it at a storage facility.

4. Be realistic and don’t forget to have fun

Most people don’t feel like cleaning up. Especially not the big boring spring clean up. Therefore it’s important to make the best of it and don’t overdo stuff. You don’t have to clean every spoon or book on the shelf separately inside out. If it’s clean, it’s clean!!

So, try not to be too pessimistic, turn up the music, make yourself comfortable and don’t forget to treat yourself!

If you really don’t feel like it, you can also ask a friend to help, and in return you help cleaning up their house. Double the fun!
5. The big spring cleanup takes time and preparation is key

in order to start cleaning up your house, you need the proper cleaning materials or arrange a storage unit, if needed. So, make an inventory of what you think you might need and what you already have. Here’s a small list of frequently used cleaning items for big cleanups:

Vacuum & vacuum cleaner bags
Cleaning mop
Trash cans and garbage bags
Bathroom cleaners
Household cleaners
Kitchen Cleaners
Kitchen paper
Hand Soap and Sanitizers
Bleach
Outdoor cleaners
Glass and window cleaners
Brooms
Cleaners
Mop pails
Storage unit

Germ Proof Your Home

Since this is flu season here are some types to help you keep your home germ proof to reduce the chances of getting sick. As we all know, it's no fun getting sick.

1- Hand washing
Keeping your hands sanitized is the single most important thing. We like to touch things and those things have germs that we carry with us. So make sure you wash your hands often and especially when you first walk into your home.

2. Use paper towels to dry your hands
If you are like us, we normally have hand towels in the bathroom for guest to use. Even though you washed your hands there is still the possibility of catching germs.

3. Use a humidifier
By using a humidifier you can slow down the spread of the tiny particles of influenza that can suspend in the air. Influenza is less likely to survive in warmer, humidified air.

4. Clean hard surfaces
Clean the surfaces you touch more often. Think about your nightstands, sink faucets, light switches, doorknobs, remotes, phones, refrigerators, toys, toilet (yuck) and many other things we touch throughout the day. Viruses stay in the air for a period of time. Use any cleaning formula that features bleach or an antibacterial product. And again, use paper towels and dispose after use.

By following some of these tips will help reduce your chances of catching the flu.

Top Five Cleaning Tips

1. To remove body oil stains from collars and cuffs of colored shirts and blouses, rub hair shampoo directly on the stains. Rinse out the shampoo, then wash the clothes as usual.
2. To pick up small fragments of broken glass, press pieces of bread onto the affected area.
3. Buffing a marble tabletop with car polish leaves a thin, invisible film that helps reduce the risk of stains.
4. Eucalyptus oil removes the gummy residue left by store price stickers.
5. To clean a stainless-steel sink, put the stopper in the sink with two denture cleaning tablets and half fill with water; leave for several hours or overnight and the next day it should be sparkling.

Cleaning Tip:

Lemon-infused vinegar is also known as citrus vinegar. You can make your own by placing lemon rinds in a jar with white distilled vinegar and let it soak for two weeks.

After two weeks strain the vinegar and dilute it to a 1:1 ratio of citrus vinegar and water and pour it into a clean, empty spray bottle. This is great to use on cutting grease and grime, it also breaks down soap scum, and leaves your surfaces shiny and clean.

Citrus is a great degreaser, stain remover, and smells fresh. Vinegar is a great cleaning agent that breaks down mold, grease, mineral deposits, and bacteria.

What is even more amazing that the acidity of both kills germs, which makes it perfect for the bathroom, cleaning kitchen counters, and can be used for just about any kind of cleaner.

Cleaning Tip of the Day

Remove Bathroom Soap Scum

Soap has a nasty way of forming a hard-to-remove film on tile in tubs and showers. You won't get rid of it by rubbing. Instead, wait for the surface to dry, then scrape off the scum with a 4-in. plastic putty knife. For grout lines and textured surfaces, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

To prevent soap scum buildup, stop using real soap and start using a synthetic. Chemically speaking, any soap in a liquid or gel form, and some bar soaps (Zest and Ivory), are actually synthetic soaps and much less likely to leave a tough film in your sink, shower or tub.

Cleaning Tip of the Day

Do you ever wonder how to clean your children's small toys? Take a laundry bag that you can buy at Walmart for about a buck and fill it with the toys. You could even put those small Lego's in with it. Those the bag into the washing machine or you can place it on your dishwasher, just make sure you turn the heat dry off.
