This recent rain has been wonderful! However, it can lead to an increase in termite movement. Right after a decent rain, when soil moisture and humidity spike, termites may start to swarm and start mating to create new colonies. Over the next several days, it’s important you keep an eye out for any wings appearing by windows or mud tubes being formed up your foundation. If you see any signs, take action before they get into your home or building and start causing damage!

Have you seen small piles of sawdust in you home and swarms of winged ants? If so, you may have Carpenter Ants! Carpenter Ants build nest in wood which can cause significant structural damage if left untreated! Their infestations can be caused by moisture, so they are going to be most prominent by window sills, roof eaves and porch posts, as well as any leaking pipes and dishwashers, however you can find them anywhere throughout a house or building.

It’s that time of year, when we first start to see a surge in fly activity. You may have seen one or two flies the past couple months, but with the weather staying consistently warm, flies are starting to move out of their winter shelters. To make sure they stay out of your home, replace torn window screens and seal any gaps around door, as well as keep garbage cleaned up and rotting food out of your home. If you’ve fixed these problems and still are seeing a bunch of flies, you may need some help to actually get rid of them!

Do ants keep appearing in your home? Ants can be hard to get rid of once they’ve entered your home, because of the pheromone trails they put off to tell other ants where to go! The best way to get rid of ants is to seal any entry points they may be using to come in and eliminate any food sources. If you have a distinct trail that they follow, you can scrub it with soapy water to remove any pheromones for new ants to follow!

Tick season is in full swing, and you may not even notice these blood sucking little pests until they’ve already transmitted a disease to you! Although the risk of infection is significantly lower if you remove the tick within 24 hours, it’s important to check yourself immediately after being out in tall grass or wooded areas. To help keep them from appearing in your yard, it’s best to mow your yard regularly to keep your grass and w**ds short and clear any brush to reduce habitat!

If we start to get some extreme weather this spring, and your house isn’t sealed up well, has poor drainage, mulch or vegetation by the house, or a sprinkler system, you may start to notice lots of teeny tiny bugs and they could be Clover Mites! Clover mites are just a nuisance and don’t cause harm to humans, but if you crush them they will leave rust-colored stains. The best way to get rid of them is to vacuum them up. Then, it’s important to seal any entry points and remove vegetation near your foundation, so they won’t come back!

Paper wasps are just starting to appear and build their nests for the season. These wasps are often brown, reddish, or black with yellow markings. They can be confused with yellowjackets, but are not near as aggressive. However, they will attack if their nest is disturbed or you come too close! Paper wasps build papery, honeycomb like nests and like to them under eaves, porch ceilings, and overhangs. They can be beneficial in controlling caterpillars, flies, and spiders.

If you’re taking a trip for spring break or this summer, remember to always check wherever you are staying for bedbugs. These little hitchhikers love to hide in your luggage and come back home with you. Double check mattresses, furniture, and around baseboards for any signs of bedbugs before staying anywhere!
