We always get asked, how do you clean duct work. It's not a easy question. We use a variety of tools as 1 type of system doesn't work everywhere.
Brush system - for build up of soot and dust on older ducts (origionally used for convection on coal heating)
Compressed air system- most commonly used as it doesn't catch or wrap around wires/plumbing/gas lines, and has a high flow rate that can push or pull debris to desired extraction point.
Vacuum systems
Truck mounted vac system - can be used on every system, can be slower on large duct work.
Negative air machine (5000cfm +) - this is most commonly used on easy access systems, and large duct jobs. This system runs off of electric and is extremely powerful but isn't a fit for every job, especially not for small jobs.
