This basement had about 16 inches of water after the sump pump failed.

It doesn’t take long for a basement to flood when a sump pump quits working. Water like this can damage flooring, walls, furniture, and anything stored on the floor. Fortunately, this was an unfinished basement.

This sewer line had a telephone/internet line bored through it years ago.

The damaged section of pipe allowed dirt and mud to wash into the sewer line. Over time, toilet paper and waste would catch on the damaged area, causing repeated backups and clogs.

We dug up the damaged section, removed the broken pipe, installed a new cleanout, and got everything flowing properly again.

Not every sewer problem shows up inside the house.

This customer called because sewage was surfacing in the yard. After opening the cleanout and running the cable, we found the problem—tree roots had worked their way into the sewer line and created a blockage.

It’s something I see all the time, especially in older sewer lines around Mattoon and the surrounding areas.

The good news is we were able to get the line opened back up and flowing again.

If you’ve noticed slow drains, backups, gurgling toilets, or wet spots in the yard, don’t ignore them. Small sewer issues have a way of becoming big sewer issues.

Not every sewer problem can be fixed with a simple cleaning.

This customer ended up needing a full sewer line replacement after years of root intrusion and failing pipe.

Spent the day replacing the line and installing new PVC from the house out to the main to help prevent future issues.

I also got the opportunity to work alongside the guy who taught me a lot early on in the sewer industry. It was great getting to work together again on a project like this.

Most older homes around Mattoon still have clay tile sewer lines underground, and over time roots, offsets, and collapsed sections can become major problems.

Slow drains, backups, or frequent sewer issues are usually signs something bigger is going on underground.

I was working on a tub drain the other day and found a toy lodged inside the drain. This is a great reminder of why it’s important to use a drain cover in your tub.

This toy was restricting the flow and causing the water to back up during showers.

I recently installed a clean out for a customer due to a break in the sewer line. After getting down to the line, I found this root to be the issue.

This root grew right along the side of the pipe and over time it collapsed the clay tile line.

For size comparison, the clean out is 4 inch PVC.

It’s not always roots and wipes causing issues. This customer tried to fix a drain line a while back and their cable broke off in the line. Now this started to cause bigger issues.
