Most people around Charlotte call it a “palmetto bug.” Truth is, it’s a large American cockroach.

You might wonder: “Why are these things suddenly inside my house??”

What happens is that fall is when these pests often start seeking shelter.

These pests rarely appear out of nowhere and usually there are clues.

❌ Large droppings that look like black pepper or coffee grounds in garages, laundry rooms, or under sinks
❌ A musty or oily smell in cabinets or pantries where they travel often
❌ Shed skins around baseboards or behind appliances
❌ Seeing one at night when lights flip on — they scatter fast!

💡 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺:

🌿 Look at what touches your home.
Tree branches against the roof create bridges. Mulch piled high against siding holds moisture and hides colonies. Keep mulch a few inches away from the foundation. Trim plants back. Create a small dry zone around the house.

🐜 Watch for the scouts.
One ant on the counter means a colony is close. Wipe the area with vinegar or soapy water. Plain water will not remove the scent trail. The trail brings reinforcements.

💧 Check for hidden moisture.
Look under sinks. Check around dishwashers. Feel around window sills after rain. Damp wood and tiny leaks are magnets. Fixing a slow drip can stop a full invasion.

🛠️ Seal more than you think you need to.
Sugar, pet food, and even bread crumbs in a toaster tray feed ants for weeks. Store pantry goods in sealed containers. Vacuum cabinets and pantry shelves, not just the floor.
