🐜 Flying Ants or Termites? Here's How to Tell.

Seeing winged insects around your home can be alarming—but not all of them are termites.

Flying ants and termites are often mistaken for one another, but there are a few key differences you can look for.

🐜 Flying Ants

✔️ Narrow, pinched waist
✔️ Elbowed (bent) antennae
✔️ Front wings are longer than the back wings
✔️ Usually dark brown or black

🪵 Termites

✔️ Thick, straight body with no pinched waist
✔️ Straight antennae
✔️ Four wings that are all the same length
✔️ Often light brown or creamy in color

So why does it matter?

Flying ants are simply reproductive ants leaving the colony to start new nests. While some species, like carpenter ants, can damage wood, they don't eat it.
