Main St. In the 1950s, Monroe Cleaners moved to its present location of 405 W. in the old Travelstead Bus Garage. Fred Monroe, current owner and operator since 1975, is the 3rd generation Monroe to operate the business. Drycleaning is simply the use of fluids to remove soil and stains from fabric. It is called 'drycleaning' because the fluids contain little or no water and do not pe*****te the fib
ers as water does. This process actually dissolves grease and oils and removes them from the garment. If stains are still present after this stage, the article of clothing is set aside for specialized spotting with different chemical solvents, then re-cleaned. There are steam units, silk units, pant units, shirt units and general pressing units with irons to finish the clothing. Monroe Cleaners specializes in Wedding Gown Preservation services. The gowns are drycleaned separate from general clothing after careful attention to securing any jewels and beads. After this initial cleaning, the dresses are hung and examined carefully for stains of food, wine, body oils, dirty hemlines, etc. The gowns will then be treated according to the remaining stains and could go through several gentle cleaning treatments and/or spot cleaning before being drycleaned once again to return the fabric to as close to the original as possible. After the gowns are clean and stain free, they are steamed to remove wrinkles and packed in an archival grade, acid free box with acid free tissue gently surrounding the dress and buffering the folds. The gowns are returned to the customer for storage. Under a bed or on a top shelf in the closet is an ideal (dark) storage location for the heirloom. Monroe Cleaners also drycleans draperies. Besides flushing out the grit, smoke and vapors that dull the drapes' colors; expert finishing by the Adjust-a-Drape unit can guarantee exact length and even hemlines. With 99 years of experience, Monroe Cleaners plans to continue servicing southern Illinois for many years to come.
