Great rug cleaning story!

Here is a happy rug that is visiting us. It is an antique Ersari-Beshir with a stunning, almost magical, design.

This rug is “lucky” because it just happened to be pulled out of a storage unit on the cusp of a very large moth infestation. If the rug had been left where it was, left untouched, it would have not survived the rest of the year.

That would have been a heartbreaking loss. The client, and our team, were SO excited after the moth treatment, and the wash, to see that there was only minimal damage.

We were so happy the rug was rescued in time.

Look at the use of color and design in this piece. How the dark outlines and the light highlights bring depth to the overall look of the rug.

The use of the white in the medallions makes them look like they are floating when you see this piece in person. They are like suns in the rug hovering over the vines and flowers in the background.

The borders have repeated designs that I believe were meant to represent animals, but to me they look like an abundance of H’s. So I have just decided to refer to these from this point on as “happy circles.”

That might disturb some rug academics… but I have also just decided that possibly disturbing some academics makes me happy too! :) Thanks for sharing Lisa!

Thanks Lisa for sharing this post on an amazing rug

This very long runner was unrolled and announced itself like a giant gorgeous RUG RAINBOW in our lobby at Blatchford’s.

It is a lovely antique NW Persian runner. When it was cleaned, and we went to take photos - WOW! This rug and all of its wonderful natural dyed wool GLOWED.

The colors are crisp and stunning. It’s a rug that stops you in your tracks in person. You have to gaze and absorb its beauty. It’s like coming across a hillside covered in flowers. You have to stop and enjoy it.

The border design of this piece is a series of “S” motifs, usually representing protection and good luck.

This rug has lovely dye lot variations in every color.

In the green you can see stripes of blue, yellow, and green as the colors shift in this piece.

It’s a rug so full of color and life. It represents the magic of GREAT wool that a rug that has had generations of owners walking on it for over a century still is in such fantastic shape. It’s pretty unbelievable.

Friday rug post from our friend Lisa!

Here is a magical rug that visited us for some TLC recently.

This is a Yazd Persian rug, and it is a textile design built of beautiful woven flowers.

Standing in the middle of this rug, you see vines and flowers flowing outward in every direction throughout the field.

The borders are built of rows of flowers, leaves, and vines.

You get lost in the middle of this piece. It’s stunning.

It’s like standing in the middle of a hillside EXPLODING with flowers everywhere you look.

The colors are rich jewel tones, the wool is soft, and the designs are beautiful. And so full of life.

I am amazed every time I see a rug this size with this much workmanship put into it. It really does seem magical.

I hope you enjoyed meeting my rug friend.

Check out this rug in our friend Lisa's shop and her comments!

This modern design is mesmerizing. This textile is a design by Rex Ray, woven in wool in India.

The motifs are magical. I love the shapes and colors. It makes me feel like a small butterfly flowing around large floral friends.

This is traditional hand-knotted construction. The wool is strong with a lovely texture.

The colors up close have variations throughout which gives every section of this rug a fabulous visual texture.

I am not a fan of the very short shear of the wool on this piece. Especially since it was such nice wool to begin with. If the wool were even left a quarter of an inch longer, it would have added DECADES more to its longevity.

In the past few decades shearing a rug so that it is almost a flatweave with no real “pile” is the trend. As is the “no fringe” look.

Despite the short shear, this will still be a wool rug that will look lovely for quite a few more decades.

It’s such a beautiful piece of floor art. I hope you enjoyed meeting my rug friend this week.

Here is an older Turkish rug that came in for some care.

It is a happy tribal weaving, wool knots woven on a wool foundation. I love how the dark medallion looks like it is hovering over that soft rose background.

This rug has an interesting mix of colors and tones. A very strong brown and strong orange-red.

Mixed with a soft lavender, soft rose, and soft gold.

They aren’t colors I would normally say blend well together, but with this piece, somehow it works for me. I like it.

The white border with its colorful vines and flowers frames the rug nicely.

And I love the corner lavender spandrels filled with a great mix of motifs. They look like happy gatherings of rug symbols happening in every corner of this rug.

I hope your Friday and weekend are full of happy gatherings too!

Check out this post from Lisa Wagner!

We had a gorgeous gem of a rug come in for some care.

This small rug is more than a century old, a Kurdish weaving.

The colors in this piece, and the texture of the wool, are stunning. I love how the wool shines like silk.

The browns have oxidized with age, so these areas are lower in height than the other colors. So those colorful motifs POP UP with more life in this design. Like flowers popping up to bloom.

In today’s market there are new rugs that stores refer to as “antiqued.” These new rugs are chemically damaged to make them look antique, at least their definition of what that means. These so-called “vintage” rugs are faded, bleached, threadbare, and dull.

It doesn’t make sense to me, because the REAL antique rugs are so alive with color and shine. They are beautiful.

I am so happy that these hand knotted wool rugs last for centuries. This means I get to enjoy them FOREVER. Hooray! :)
