Most people use their septic system every single day… without ever really knowing how it works. 🤔

Your septic system is actually its own small wastewater treatment system underground. When everything is working properly, it quietly does its job 24/7 protecting your home, your property, and the environment.

Here’s the simple version of how it works:

🏡 Wastewater from your sinks, showers, toilets, and laundry flows into the septic tank.

Inside the tank:
• solids settle to the bottom (sludge)
• lighter materials float to the top (scum)
• the liquid wastewater in the middle (effluent) continues through the system

The outlet baffle helps prevent solids from leaving the tank and entering the drainfield.

From there, the effluent flows out into the drainfield where the soil naturally filters and treats the water before it safely returns to the environment.

A healthy septic system depends on:
✔ regular pumping
✔ water conservation
✔ protecting the drainfield
✔ only flushing appropriate materials

Things like wipes, grease, chemicals, and excessive water use can shorten the life of your system and lead to expensive problems.

With proper care and maintenance, many septic systems can last for decades.
