We did this job in Derry, NH last month, and this is probably my favorite color combination we've done this year.

The house is gray with black trim around the windows and doors and red shutters and doors. Black gutters were the right choice. White gutters would have stood out, but the black blends right in with the trim.

We also took care of a couple of drainage issues.

We ran an extra-long downspout along the garage to keep the water off the asphalt driveway and move it away from the foundation. That also helps prevent ice from forming on the driveway in the winter.

There is a skylight on the sun porch, so we didn't want water from the upper roof running down onto that lower roof and around the skylight. We ran a gutter along the upper roof and brought the water down through a downspout instead.

The gutters look good, and more importantly, the water is going where it should.

Your business gutters don’t have to look like an afterthought.

A Gutter System Designed Around the House

We recently finished this gutter project on a classic gambrel home in Derry, NH.

With a house like this, we were looking at more than just where to hang the gutters. There’s a lot of roofline, the gutters are easy to see, and the system has to deal with New Hampshire weather.

The homeowner wanted good drainage and winter protection without making the gutters and downspouts stand out.

One detail that made a big difference was the downspout color.

The upper sections are black to blend with the roof. Once they come down onto the light-colored siding, they change to white. That keeps the larger 3x4 downspouts from becoming the first thing you notice when you look at the house.

We went with 6-inch black seamless gutters along the roofline. The black blends into the dark roof, so from the street the gutter line almost disappears.

For the downspouts, we used 3x4 heavy-gauge aluminum. Larger gutters need a good way to get the water out. There’s no sense putting in a bigger gutter and then sending all that water through a small downspout.

The heavier aluminum also gives us a little more durability at the elbows and connections, which can take a beating when everything freezes and thaws through the winter.

We also installed heat cable in the gutters and downspouts. The idea is to help keep a drainage path open during freezing weather so melting snow and water have somewhere to go instead of freezing inside the system.

It’s a small detail, but these are the things we look at when we install a gutter system.

It needs to handle the water, make sense for the weather, and look like it belongs on the house.
