THIS POST IS BEING SHARED TO HELP THE PUBLIC UNDERSTAND HOW AND WHEN THE HUMANE SOCIETY CAN ASSIST FAMILIES AND PETS IN NEED- it was previously shared to a local page and the original post deleted. So we are sharing to help our community know the role of the HS and how we might be able to help pets and people.

Hello Ms Damerst- we aren’t sure if this is the right person - if so- I want you to know your cat is safe and well cared for and it can be returned once you show proof of ownership so we don’t give it to someone else. I evaluated kitty myself - primarily because of concerns presented by multiple people. We were told the owners are female- approximately 19 and a male partner who is approximately 42. Again I apologize if this isn’t you. We were told both resided in a home that they neither rented nor had permission to occupy and subsequently after repeated efforts by the home owner and the courts - law enforcement was notified to evict after providing a final 3 week notice that ended months and months of efforts to resolve the situation without eviction.

In addition- Our animal advocates in neighboring Carrollton informed us these persons were known “squatters” and “had been ran out of Carrollton”. There were allegedly law enforcement issues about drug use connected with “squatting”. In addition animal advocates expressed concern about neglect. They alerted us when someone believed those same persons had moved to Madison and began “squatting” with poorly cared for pets. Again, I’m sorry if this is not you- but- The Madison Jefferson County Humane Society is often called when law enforcement, landlords, veterinarians and even neighbors suspect or confirm animal abuse or neglect. We are also often informed privately by landlords and connections in law enforcement when legal actions are taken to evict persons who have either illegally occupied or failed to pay rent for extended periods of time. We do our best to help locate temporary and safe placement for pets who are made homeless for any variety of reasons. We truly hope both owners and pets are reunited in a healthy, safe, stable environment.

Again, our job is to help where we can but when law enforcement is onsite and animals have no water or food and the condition of the home indicates an unsafe environment for both pets and people - we are often asked to assist in safe placement.
Things were further complicated because both animal control had”requested off “- leaving the community’s pet in jeopardy for at least 3 days if not 4-5. In addition law enforcement was present but the shelter declined to accept the animals despite the emergency situation.

Our assistance was requested yesterday October 29th to try to place a cat that was living in “squalor and filth”. Reportedly the ammonia smell was so severe that it made it difficult for animals, law enforcement and others present to breathe. It is my understanding child protective services has or will be notified of severe risks to an infant. Again- I do not know if this is or isn’t your situation. And certainly don’t want to make whatever situation worse in which you find yourself. But on the off chance we placed your pet- we wanted you to know that you can reach out to 812-701-3717 or message our page. Simply provide proof of ownership in the form of vet or adoption records or even certification of emotional support pet. We will help coordinate care until your situation is stable.

It is truly difficult to have pets removed . We understand and offer several programs to support local families in financial distress. We provide a food bank for those who need help with dog or cat food and kitty litter for cat owners. We also provide medical care for pets likely to recover and in good living situations. We will pay to have pets gravely injured or ill euthanized so they, nor family suffer through a pets grueling illness or a cruel death. Regrettably we are not in a position, nor have the expertise to assist homeless in finding shelter or homes.

I truly hope I am posting to the wrong person. The situation you describe is very sad and seems overwhelming. Finally, Ms Thevenow is well respected and even admired for her gentleness and kindness in the community. I say that only to emphasize - we would be shocked if she was involved in the situation you describe. That point only adds to our confusion. Therefore and considering the confusion- Please reach out to the above number if we can help locate your missing pet.

A SQUIRREL IN THE ATTIC? A RACCOON UNDER THE DECK?
You didn't want to hurt us.
So you trapped us and drove us "somewhere nice.” It feels humane. But it usually isn't.
→ We don't know where food or shelter is in a new place.
→ We've lost our winter food stash — all those nuts we buried.
→ Other animals already own that territory and fight us.
→ Many relocated animals die within weeks.
And in many states, relocating wildlife is illegal without a permit.

🐿️ The MUCH KINDER way:
→ Find the entry point.
→ Install a one-way exclusion door so we can leave but not return.
→ Seal it up once we're out.
→ Trim branches that touch your roof.
LET US MOVE NEXT DOOR TO A TREE. Not to a strange forest to starve.
PLEASE SHARE- NOT EVERYBODY KNOWS. Education is key. THANK YOU!

Dutch researchers ran a beautifully simple experiment. They took nineteen newly arrived shelter cats and gave half of them a cardboard box to hide in. Then they scored everyone's stress for two weeks.

The box cats settled by day three. The cats without boxes took until day fourteen. Eleven days of extra fear, erased by cardboard. A follow-up study found the same thing: hiding boxes got cats to a calm steady state a full week earlier.

Here is the honest footnote the scientists add. Boxes lower stress. They do not get cats adopted faster. But a calmer cat is a healthier cat, and a healthier cat shows better.

Shelters always need clean cardboard boxes and the hands to cut doorways in them. Ask yours.
