(Content Warning: Talking about mental health. Specifically, depression. No explicit details, but a warning should still be made.)
My first post was my business intro post. Hopefully, y’all have seen it. But if not, do not fret, I’m back, and I want to get a little more heartfelt with it.
Firstly, Hi! I’m Jo! And I’m a Cleaning and Organizing Coach, with a focus on creating adaptable and maintainable cleaning systems, so that you can feel good about your home!
We often can get lost in the daily hustle and grind of trying to survive. There are bills. Friends drift apart and it’s hard to find new ones.
Raising children can be an isolating experience. You have to cook, clean, work. Cook, clean, work.
And if you’re not just taking care of yourself, then add all of those tasks, but for additional humans.
And it all seems like a never-ending cycle.
This can lead to some of us, feeling overwhelmed, lost, and even sometimes, depressed.
And this is what I want to talk about- mental wellness and maintaining your home.
I, like millions of US Americans, have depression.
I now think of it as a lingering thing in my mind, sometimes, I’m so on top of the world that I don’t even remember what crying is.
And then there are times, where the mere thought of pulling my body out of the covers is too much to bear.
Everything is too much to bear.
I can’t brush my teeth.
I can barely eat.
The only thing that I can do consistently, is cry.
When my mind is going through that- then you can only imagine what my room looks like.
Crumbs in the bed, clothes thrown about, tissues, wrappers, takeout bags. Trash everywhere.
And as I lie in bed, the mess around me pulls me deeper into my depressive episode.
I can not imagine a better life.
Nor can I remember one.
All that I know now, and all that I’ve ever known, has been
*this*.
So when a friend of mine began to slip into a depressive episode, I told them that I wanted to clean their home. I know, such a random request.
But the way I viewed it was:
If I could have had someone to help me maintain my physical space while I was at my lowest, I would've felt like I was drowning a little bit less.
I could've used that little bit of mental energy towards dreaming and remembering the things that brought me joy, rather than feeling even more worthless because I couldn’t do the simple task of keeping my room clean.
After two months of doing so, I realized that other people are probably going through the same thing as my friend, and what I’ve gone through so many times. And maybe those people want help. So I quit my job. (Lol, in addition to several other reasons, but it sounded exciting.)
I then spent months planning and hesitating. Lots of self-doubt, overthinking, and depression.
And I say all of this, for a few reasons:
-So I can share the story behind my company
-So I can share the struggles that I’ve had so far in trying to launch said company
-So I can help take down the facade of perfection we see on social media.
I understand the concept of escapism, and I am a sucker for a good Pinterest vision board.
But sometimes we hold ourselves back from a better life because our current life isn’t perfect.
I hope that I’ve been able to paint a picture of my sincere dedication and excitement for Mindful Cleaning Co.
I hope that you and I can collaborate in some capacity.
