The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness announced Wednesday, August 23, 2017 that mosquitoes with the West Nile virus have been detected in Louisville. There are six area codes these mosquitoes were confirmed; they are 40204, 40205, 40206, 40208, 40212 and 40214. In most occurrences, people with West Nile virus either show no symptoms or relatively mild symptoms. But less than one percent of infected people develop a serious neurologic illness, such as encephalitis or meningitis. [ 247 more words ]

One spider in Kentucky that is potentially dangerous is the brown recluse. Although bites are rare, the venom can cause serious wounds and infestations should be taken seriously. The good news is that the brown recluse is not aggressive. Most bites occur in response to body pressure, when a spider is inadvertently trapped against bare skin.
