Winter & Insects!
I have heard many people over the years say that “this winter was cold, I bet it killed all the insects”. First, you must understand the biology of insects to know that this just does not happen. Many adult insects die during the winter and leave behind egg sacs that begin to hatch when the weather warms. Others, hide under tree bark or another place that provides shelter and enter a state called “diapause” a near frozen state that allows them to survive even extreme winters. These insects produce a substance all most like anti freeze to protect them from freezing. While some insects just seem to carry on as nothing has changed.
Ants- When the weather starts to get cooler their body temperature drops and they become sluggish. They respond to this by seeking the warm soil further down, or hiding under rocks, or under tree bark. They bunch together in clusters to maintain body heat as they huddle protectively around the queen. Many species of ants eat large amounts of food in the autumn to put on fat, thereby allowing them to go without much food during the winter. Some species of ants will continue to try to enter your home even in the winter.
A few examples:
Spiders- Different species of spiders handle winter in different ways. Many spiders die and leave egg sacs behind to hatch in spring. While other spiders enter a dormant state. They will sometimes come out on warmer days to hunt for food. While a few continue on like nothing has changed inside.
Wasp- adult wasp die and the queen will look for shelter. A queen will shelter in an area that will protect them from the cold and other predators. When springtime and worm weather returns, the queen will leave her protective place and form a new colony.
Beetles- When days start to get colder, beetles metabolic rate drops, and they use excess stored fat to survive cold winters. They burrow into the ground, under rocks, or around the foundation of your home for protection.
When it starts to warm up, give us a call and eliminate those insects.
