A drain may start flowing again even when the entire blockage has not been removed. Sometimes, a quick cleaning creates just enough space for water to pass while grease, hair, soap residue, or other material remains along the pipe walls.
That leftover buildup can catch new debris, gradually narrow the pipe again, and cause the clog to return. If the same drain repeatedly becomes slow, smells unpleasant, gurgles, or backs up, the plumbing may need a more thorough inspection and cleaning.
