A title search of our county records indicates that this cemetery dates back to around 1893 when the last recorded land transaction was made. History indicates that some of the early immigrants came into this area from Mexico as early as 1870. These immigrants offered so much to the economic and social development of Caldwell County, with their varied talents and interests, and their sincere desir
e to share in the American Dream. Among many graves, are the names of veterans of military service dating back to WWI, as well as generation of area residents. There are different stories about how the cemetery acquired its original name, The Mexican Cemetery, also known as the Woodmen of the World (Panteon de los Hacheros). As cited earlier, the last known transfer of the land occurred in 1893. However, it was not until several local citizens formed a non-profit corporation on March 10, 2005, that it was given its present name of Cementerio Navarro Historico. The association has obtained title to the property and its restoring and maintaining the cemetery. With the assistance of our Caldwell County Commissioners, City of Lockhart Council and Lockhart ISD Board of Trustees, the association obtained title on July 21, 2005. The Texas Historical Commission designated it as a Historical Cemetery in the fall of 2005. This was accomplished with the invaluable assistance of the Caldwell County Historical Commission. Work continues on the actions needed to receive the commemorative plaque. Since receiving title, the association has completed some of its planned projects such as replacing and or repairing the fences, construction of the flagpole for our national and state flags, repairing and cleaning all of the headstones, obtaining the historical designation and maintaining the grounds.
