🌰 Central Texas Oaks Are Going Nuts — Literally! 🌰

If you’ve noticed the deer ignoring your feeders like they’re on a corn boycott… you’re not crazy. We’re in a heavy mast year, and the acorns are falling faster than raccoons can steal them.

I just wrote a funny (and surprisingly educational) blog post about how this acorn explosion affects deer hunting, feeders, and just about every critter in the Hill Country.

👉 Check it out here: https://thewildlifemanagementcompany.com/f/heavy-mast-hidden-deer

You’ll laugh… and maybe finally understand why your deer have vanished into the oak motts.

Most “Arrowheads” Aren’t Arrowheads… and That’s the Cool Part 🤯🪨

Central Texas folks love showing me their “arrowheads”… but here’s the truth:

👉 Most of those points were never on an arrow.
👉 The big ones you find? Those were usually atlatl dart points (a prehistoric spear-thrower) or blades #, not bow-and-arrow tips.
👉 And those giant 4–6 inch beauties? Knives and blades, not arrows.

Real arrowheads are tiny, thin, and often under 1½ inches.
If it looks like it could take down a bison by itself… it probably wasn’t on an arrow. 😆

The good news?
Atlatl points and blades are usually older, cooler, and tell a deeper story about the people who lived here long before us.

If your land has a river, creek, or spring—and it keeps turning up “arrowheads”—I can help you figure out whether you’ve got true arrow points, atlatl dart points, or ancient blades.

🐺 Coyote Pup Season in Central Texas 🐾

Ever wonder why you hear more howling in February or see young coyotes roaming your pastures in the fall? It’s all part of the Central Texas coyote calendar!

Right now, coyotes are pairing up, choosing dens, and preparing for spring pups. By April, those pups will be poking their heads out and learning to hunt in the brushy hills and creek bottoms around Llano, Burnet, and Lampasas.

Coyotes play an important ecological role—but when they get too close to homes, pets, or livestock, we can help.

At The Wildlife Management Company of Texas, we use humane, science-based control and exclusion methods to keep both people and wildlife safe.

“When the Rut Runs Wild”

It’s that time again in the Hill Country — when bucks forget how to act and love runs wild through the brush. 💘

The whitetail rut is nature’s version of Tinder: bucks chase, clash, and compete while does play hard to get. It’s all instinct — and it peaks right here in Central Texas from November 10–25.

Want to know what triggers it, what signs to watch for, and how it affects local herds? Check out our latest post 👉 “Hill Country Tinder Season: When Whitetail Romance Runs Wild”

🐺 Fall is coyote dispersal season in Central Texas. Young coyotes are leaving their parents and striking out on their own — and that’s when trouble starts.

Inexperienced hunters often turn to the easiest targets: chickens, goats, pet food…even cats and small dogs.

👉 Protect your pets and property:
• Bring pets in at night
• Secure coops & pens
• Eliminate food sources
• Check fences for gaps

If you’re noticing new coyotes around your property, it may be dispersal at work. We can help keep your home and land safe.

👀 A bird not seen in Texas for over 60 years has made a surprise return!

The double-striped thick-knee — a striking, nocturnal bird with piercing yellow eyes — was spotted in Wilson County this year, the first sighting since 1961.

This Central & South American wanderer had birders racing from all over Texas for a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse. 🌎🐦

It’s a reminder that nature loves surprises — and Texas is never short on them.
