🦝 WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND BABY RACCOONS 🦝

Finding a litter of baby raccoons can be surprising—and your first instinct might be to help. But before you move them, there are a few important things to know!

👀 First, look for the mother.
Baby raccoons are rarely abandoned. The mother may be nearby searching for food and can return for her babies.

🚫 Don't try to relocate the babies yourself.
Moving them away from the area can separate them from their mother and may create a bigger wildlife problem.

🏠 If they're inside your home:
Keep your distance and avoid blocking potential exit points until the situation can be properly assessed. A wildlife professional can determine where the animals are getting in and how to safely address the situation.

🔎 Look for the entry point.
Raccoons can enter through damaged soffits, roof areas, vents, chimneys, and other openings. Finding and addressing the entry point is an important part of preventing the problem from happening again.

⚠️ Never attempt to handle a wild animal or its babies. Mother raccoons can become defensive when they feel their young are threatened.

🦨 WHAT ATTRACTS SKUNKS TO YOUR YARD? 🦨

If you’ve started noticing skunks hanging around your property, there’s probably something attracting them!

Skunks are opportunistic feeders, so yards with easy access to food, water, and shelter can become very appealing. 👀

Here are some common things that may bring them around:

🍖 Accessible garbage – Unsecured trash can provide an easy meal.
🐾 Pet food – Leaving food or water outside can attract wildlife.
🐛 Insects & grubs – Lawns with plenty of insects can become a skunk buffet.
🍎 Fallen fruit – Overripe fruit left on the ground can attract hungry skunks.
🌿 Shelter – Brush piles, wood piles, decks, sheds, and crawlspaces can provide places to hide or den.
💧 Water sources – Standing water and accessible outdoor water can also make your yard more inviting.

⚠️ Seeing a skunk once doesn't necessarily mean you have an infestation. But if you’re seeing them repeatedly, finding digging or lawn damage, or suspect one is denning near your home, it’s worth taking a closer look.

Ever notice that after a big rainstorm, it feels like the mosquitoes suddenly come out of nowhere?

🌧️ Heavy rain can create a whole lot of new breeding opportunities.

Mosquitoes don't need a pond or lake to reproduce. Water that collects in buckets, clogged gutters, flowerpots, toys, low spots in the yard, and other containers can provide the standing water they need to lay eggs.

After a heavy rain:

💧 New standing water appears around your property
🥚 Mosquitoes have more places to lay eggs
🌿 Wet, humid conditions create ideal resting conditions
🦟 New mosquitoes can begin emerging as their life cycle progresses

And even if you dump out the water you can see, there may be plenty of other small pockets of water hiding around your property.

That's why mosquito activity can seem to explode after a stretch of heavy rain.

A few ways to help reduce breeding areas:

✔️ Empty containers that collect rainwater
✔️ Keep gutters clear
✔️ Change birdbath water regularly
✔️ Don't leave toys, buckets, or other containers sitting outside
✔️ Check your yard for areas where water tends to collect

🐝 WHY DO WASPS BECOME MORE AGGRESSIVE LATER IN THE SUMMER?

Ever notice that wasps and yellow jackets seem to become a lot more noticeable—and a lot less friendly—as summer starts winding down?

There's a reason for that!

Earlier in the season, wasp colonies are focused heavily on building the nest and raising their young. As the colony grows, there are more workers actively protecting the nest and searching for food.

Later in the summer:

🐝 Colonies are at their largest. More workers means more activity around the nest.

🍬 Food sources start changing. As natural food sources become less available, yellow jackets are often attracted to sugary drinks, fruit, garbage, and other food around people.

🏠 Nests are well established. Wasps and yellow jackets become highly protective of their nests, especially when they feel threatened.

🚶 We're spending more time near them. Outdoor gatherings, decks, patios, and garbage areas can put people directly in their territory.

That's why a nest that seemed relatively quiet earlier in the summer can suddenly become a much bigger problem.

⚠️ Don't try to knock down or disturb an active nest yourself. Wasps and yellow jackets can defend their colony aggressively when they feel threatened.

If you notice increased stinging insect activity around your home or business, it's best to have the nest professionally inspected and treated.

🛏️ MYTH vs. FACT: Bed Bugs Only Infest Dirty Homes

MYTH:
"Bed bugs happen because a home is dirty or unclean."

FACT:
Bed bugs don't care how clean your home is.

Bed bugs are hitchhikers. They can travel into clean homes, apartments, hotels, dorms, offices, and other spaces by hiding in luggage, clothing, furniture, backpacks, and other personal belongings.

They aren't attracted to dirt—they're attracted to people and the opportunity for a blood meal.

That means even the cleanest home can experience a bed bug infestation.

Some common signs to watch for include:

🛏️ Small dark spots on mattresses or furniture
🩸 Small blood spots on bedding
🐜 Live bed bugs or shed skins
🔍 Bed bugs hiding in mattress seams, furniture cracks, and other small crevices
😴 Unexplained bites, especially after sleeping

If you find bed bugs, don't be embarrassed. It's not a reflection of your cleanliness.

🦝 DID YOU KNOW? — Raccoons Have Incredibly Dexterous Front Paws

Raccoons may look like they're just rummaging through your trash, but their front paws are surprisingly skilled!

Their paws are extremely sensitive and flexible, allowing them to:

🖐️ Open latches and containers
🗑️ Dig through garbage looking for food
🌳 Climb trees and structures
🏠 Find and manipulate openings around homes
💧 Handle and investigate objects in their environment

Those clever little paws are one reason raccoons can be such successful urban wildlife.

And unfortunately, that can include finding their way into places they don't belong.

Raccoons can use their paws to pull, pry, and manipulate weak areas around your home, including damaged soffits, vents, roofing materials, and other potential entry points.

If a raccoon discovers an opening into your attic or crawlspace, it may not take long for them to make themselves comfortable.

If you suspect wildlife is getting into your home, a wildlife inspection can help identify how they're getting in and what needs to be done to keep them out.

But those few ants may be just a tiny part of a much larger colony.

Depending on the species, ant colonies can contain thousands of ants, all working together to find food, water, and shelter.

That's why simply spraying the ants you see may not solve the problem. Those are often worker ants that are out searching for resources and bringing them back to the colony.

Common places ants look for food and water include:
