With Winter finally coming to a close, and the hellish flu season slowing down (but still among us) it's that time again I remind my lovely people to open your windows! 🪟 🍃
This is actually part of a German practice called lüften which translates to "airing out".
Also know as "burping your house" or "shock ventilation" opening the windows for short bursts of 5-15 minutes even in the dead of winter has a multitude of benefits. So let's talk about that!
1. Improves Indoor Air Quality
Homes naturally accumulate:
- Dust
- Pet dander
- Cleaning chemical residues
- Cooking particles
- Carbon dioxide from breathing
Opening windows allows fresh oxygen-rich air to replace stale air, which can make the home feel and smell fresher.
2. Reduces Odors
Air exchange helps remove lingering smells from:
- Cooking
- Pets
- Trash
- Laundry
- Musty areas
Instead of masking odors, it physically removes the particles causing them.
3. Lowers Humidity & Prevents Mustiness
Activities like showering, cooking, and drying clothes increase indoor humidity. Letting fresh air circulate can:
- Reduce moisture buildup
- Help prevent mildew or mold
- Keep fabrics and upholstery from smelling stale
4. Removes Indoor Pollutants
Many everyday items release volatile organic compounds (VOCs):
- Cleaning products
- Air fresheners
- Furniture and carpets
- Paint
Ventilation helps dilute and remove these chemicals.
5. Improves Mood & Mental Clarity
Fresh air and oxygen can help people feel:
- More alert
- Less sluggish
- Less “stuffy”
This is why rooms often feel better after just a few minutes of ventilation.
6. Helps With Seasonal Illness Prevention
Air circulation can reduce the concentration of airborne particles that carry cold or flu viruses, especially in winter when homes are sealed tightly.
Simple Way to “Burp” Your House
Open two or more windows on opposite sides of the home if possible (cross-ventilation).
Leave them open 5–15 minutes.
Do it once or twice a day, especially after cooking, cleaning, or showers.
So come on now! Time to get on up and give your home it's Fresh Start of the Season.
Your home and your body, will thank you!
