~ Tips continued ~

1. Spiders are friends!: And a signal for the presence of other bugs and pests. Treat for the pests; NOT for the spiders. Using an app like "Google Lens" or "PictureThis!" On your phone, you can take a picture to identify any insects you find. Use it on spiders to determine if the ones present are threats to your health and home. If they're not a problem, there's no need to remove them. They'll leave when the other critters leave. The easiest and most effective way to start removing the pests: a clean environment. It offers no sustenance for bugs, and they'll leave to look elsewhere. (Not always the case, such as with roaches, especially here in Arkansas, but it's still a good start to clean to better hunt them down later.)

2. On Melamine Foam ("Magic Erasers"): First, a quote: "It works because when melamine resin cures into foam, its microstructure becomes almost as hard as glass – causing it to act like super-fine sandpaper on stains." The takeaway here is that it is >sanding< at the material in a very fine way. So using it on most counters and such is perfectly fine. But be careful on screens and painted surfaces; it can easily ruin either!

3. Organizing Hardware: When you buy a box of screws/nails/etc. and go to store it, cut out a piece of the front of the box it came in (where it displays the dimensions), and slide it into your drawers for easy identification without the need for label makers and other methods. Picture for reference.

Dirty/disorganized rooms, laundry heaps, cobwebs & dust, limited accessibility or hampered movement through closets and rooms, and pest invasions.

(The included picture is a good example of clutter that needs addressing!)

So what do they have in common?

Your home is a sacred space. Your comfort and wellbeing often hinge on it being in whatever order you need for your peace of mind. For many people, changing the things listed above can be challenging, if not impossible. As humans, we thrive more when our places of safety and growth have a structure or order to rely on, and we lose parts of our rest or comfort (and sometimes parts of our sanity) when those things are actively working against our spaces.

That all said, it's difficult to find the time, money, ability, and willpower to do these things as often as they could help us.

So if you need help to restore your sacred spaces, to sort and put away that laundry, to clean those dirty dishes, to help clear out those rooms for use again, to get rid of the bugs, or ANY other task, please just remember: Lily Can Help, and Lily would be honored for the chance to help you.

Weekly Tips!

1. HONING vs. SHARPENING - Both help an edge cut better, but they're two different things:

Honing is when you straighten out or correct an edge that's been gouged or bent. You're pushing the metal back into place this way. Often, you'll find these as rods with a handle, and the kitchen section of many stores will carry honing rods (though many times the name of the item will be misleading). Honing does not sharpen.

Sharpening narrows a blade and it works by removing metal. Grinding stones, hand sharpeners, files, and other items perform this task. You're essentially scraping off the top-most layer of metal and revealing "fresher metal" underneath.

Now that you know, try to remember to do BOTH as needed =^_^=

2. Vacuuming - One tip I cannot emphasize enough: Go take your vacuum's filter out right now and go wash it, clean it, replace it, whatever. But take care of your vac's filter and clean the agitator brush every once in a while. It absolutely makes a difference!

3. When Cleaning Wood - If you use any sort of spray or liquid to clean a wooden desk, table, chair, etc., be sure to dry it as quickly as you can. The water gets into the wood and (with not much time), damages it in a big way. You should alse use this same thought process when it comes to cleaning your walls!

Sunday Tips!

1. Difficult Screws: If you're trying to remove a stubborn or stripping screw, try getting a rubber band and lay it across the slot in the screw. Press your drill or screwdriver into the slot, squishing the rubber band between the two. Try again to turn the screw now that the rubber markedly improves the grip and helps prevent some of the increased stripping.

2. When Mowing: For the average yard, a good rule of thumb is to only be cutting a 1/3rd of it at a time to promote its health and to avoid the yellowing that can sometimes happen.

3. Cleaning Indoor Mold: If you're trying to remove mold in your bathroom walls or grout, remember that bleach, while effective, cannot pe*****te surfaces well and will not kill the deeper, more critical parts of the mold. Skip the bleach and use white vinegar instead; it can kill the mold and will "run deeper" than bleach will.

CAUTION: If you have used bleach OR vinegar to clean a spot already, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE OTHER CHEMICAL. Vinegar and bleach combine to make an invisible, oderless gas that is potentially lethal. Use the absolute best ventilation possible when working with any chemicals and follow all instructions.

As a friendly reminder to those who need it:

Lily Can Help is always first and foremost for the people who need it most. At-risk/frequently targeted groups and minorities are a priority, beginning with safety and ending with relief and comfort. Any of the following (and more) are exactly who we mean to assist whenever possible, and are listed in no particular order.

• LGBTQIA+
• BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color)
• Those with Fixed or Limited incomes
• Elderly / Retirees / Veterans
• Children & Animals / Pets
• People with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities & challenges

These communities are often ostracized, and treated aggressively or without understanding. As a person in more than one of these categories, I'm familiar with many of the challenges involved in trying to live peacefully and with addressing someone's quality of life. Therefore, people from these groups are able to get our assistance more urgently.

If you're unsure about anything, we enthusiastically encourage you to ask!
