Every July, homeowners along the coast spot a very large wasp hovering low over lawns, sidewalks, and sandy patches, and understandably assume the worst. In almost every case it is a cicada killer wasp. Despite a size that can reach nearly two inches, it is a solitary insect that poses little risk to people. The males cannot sting at all, and the females sting only if they are handled or stepped on.

Cicada killers dig burrows in bare, well-drained soil and hunt cicadas, so seeing them points to dry, sunny ground rather than a problem indoors.
