Crawlspaces are one of the most overlooked entry points along the coast, and spring rainfall is when problems usually take hold. Standing water, damp insulation, and rotting wood create exactly the conditions that termites, cockroaches, rodents, and palmetto bugs look for, and once activity establishes underneath the home, it spreads upward.

Wilkey Services inspects crawlspaces as part of a full property assessment. We look for moisture intrusion, conducive wood-to-soil contact, v***r barrier failures, and active pest signs. Catching crawlspace conditions in May is the difference between a contained issue and a structural one.

Red imported fire ants are common across the Grand Strand and inland through Horry and Georgetown Counties. Their mounds are easy to spot in lawns, along driveways, around utility boxes, and near landscape edges. What is harder to see is how far the colony extends underground. A single mound is often just one access point to a much larger system, which is why over-the-counter mound treatments often fail to resolve the problem.

Fire ant stings are painful, and they pose a particular risk to children, pets, and anyone with a sensitivity to insect venom. Wilkey Services treats fire ants as part of regular pest management programs throughout coastal South Carolina.

Hurricane season starts June 1, and the conditions storms create, including standing water, downed limbs, damaged roof penetrations, soaked crawlspaces, and shifted soil around foundations, all increase pest pressure significantly. Late May is the right window to address the exterior of your property while access is still easy and weather is predictable.

Wilkey Services can inspect the perimeter of your home, identify gaps and conducive conditions, and refresh exterior barrier treatments so your property is set before the season turns. For commercial properties, this is also the moment to confirm your pest management plan is current and ready for storm-related disruptions.

The earlier a stinging insect nest is found, the simpler the treatment. A walkthrough of your property once or twice in May can help your technician get to the right spots faster on the next visit.

Look up at eaves, soffit corners, and the underside of porch ceilings. Check around exterior light fixtures, mailbox posts, and the inside of grills that have been sitting unused. Watch for repeated activity at a single point in the yard. Wasps and yellow jackets often nest in irrigation boxes, retaining wall gaps, and ground voids near landscape edging. Note the location and report it when you call.

You do not need to identify the species or the nest type. Knowing where to send us is what matters.

Memorial Day weekend marked the beginning of the busiest stretch of the year along the Grand Strand!

For property owners, that means more foot traffic, more turnover at vacation rentals, more outdoor gatherings, and more opportunity for pests to enter spaces they were not in before. Bed bugs travel in luggage. Ants and cockroaches follow food. Mosquitoes find their way to every patio and pool deck.

If you manage a rental property or commercial location along the coast, the weeks before Memorial Day are the right time to schedule a preventative inspection. Wilkey Services works with hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and other commercial properties throughout the region.

Tick activity rises throughout May in coastal South Carolina. The Lone Star tick is the most common species in this region, and it is active during the day in wooded areas, brush lines, and tall grass. The American dog tick and the black-legged tick are also present. Ticks can transmit several illnesses, including ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and alpha-gal syndrome, which is associated specifically with the Lone Star tick.

Wilkey Services includes tick treatment as part of our outdoor pest management programs, with a focus on the yard perimeter, wood lines, and shaded vegetation where ticks rest.

Coastal South Carolina supports a wide range of spider species, and most of them are harmless. Two that are not, and that Wilkey Services regularly treats for, are the black widow and the brown recluse. Both prefer quiet, undisturbed spaces. Garages, sheds, basements, crawlspaces, garden boxes, and stored seasonal items are common nesting areas. Activity often goes unnoticed until something is moved.

Wilkey Services provides spider control as part of residential and commercial pest management. Treatments target both the spiders and the small insect populations they feed on, which addresses the conditions that attract them in the first place.

May is the month when paper wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets begin establishing the nests that will grow throughout summer. Queens that overwintered are now scouting eaves, soffits, deck railings, playsets, sheds, and irrigation boxes for sheltered spots to start a colony. Nests are small and easy to miss at this stage, which is exactly why early identification matters. A nest the size of a golf ball in May can hold several hundred wasps by August.

If you have noticed wasp activity around your home or business, do not attempt to remove a nest on your own.

Wilkey Services handles stinging insect treatments throughout the Myrtle Beach area, Horry and Georgetown Counties, and Wilmington.

Termite swarms in coastal South Carolina do not happen all at once. April's swarms are usually eastern subterranean termites. May and June bring a second wave from the Formosan subterranean termite, an aggressive species established along the Grand Strand. Formosan colonies grow larger than native colonies, and their swarms typically occur on warm, humid evenings, often around dusk. They are strongly attracted to lights, which is why porch lights and storefront signage can attract them in significant numbers.

If you saw swarmers in April and assumed you handled the issue, a second swarm in May is a sign of a different colony, not the same one returning.

Wilkey Services has inspected and treated termite activity along the coast since 2010.

Spring is the season homeowners along the coast most often confuse carpenter ants with termites. Both can produce winged swarmers, and both are associated with wood. The differences matter because the treatments are not the same.

Termite swarmers have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a thick body without a defined waist. Carpenter ant swarmers have bent antennae, unequal wings (front wings longer than back), and a pinched waist. Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate it to create nesting galleries, often in damp or previously damaged wood around windows, door frames, and rooflines. Misidentifying either one delays the right response.

Wilkey Services handles both, and the inspection is what determines which.
