October is Bat Appreciation Month! 🦇 Some of you might be thinking, why should we appreciate bats? Well, here are a few very good reasons:

🦇 In Nebraska we have 13 different species of bats. Each of these bat species are insectivores, meaning they eat a lot of pesky insects, like mosquitoes.

🦇 Each bat can eat between about 600 and 1,000 mosquitos and other kinds of insects in only one hour, saving farmers billions of dollars in pesticides and crop loss.

🦇 Studying bats has led to advancements in flight and sonar capabilities.

🦇 Bat research has led to medical discoveries in vaccines and medications that have benefited human health.

October 24-31 is Bat Week!

Bats have never really had a great reputation, but the truth is they are a secret weapon...for farmers! Bats are worth around $3.7 billion to US agriculture. Many farmers all over the country are encouraging bats to forage around their crops - whether than be corn, pecans, almonds, or anything else.

New studies are showing that bats are eating numerous amounts of agricultural pests, both native and migratory. They are having an invisible effect on agricultural fields and crops, especially those that are downwind.

In Nebraska, one of the food sources of bats are mosquitoes, which are the deadliest animal in the world. So this week you should thank a bat, because you’re probably eating something that a bat helped keep pests off of!
