Backwashing gets that dirt that sticks to the top of the sand and pushes it out of the filter. I still suggest cartridge filters for anyone building a pool. Less hassle and filters better than sand.

Here’s a comparison of the main pool filter types and the approximate particle sizes they can capture. Smaller micron numbers mean finer filtration. DE (Diatomaceous Earth)

2–5 microns

Perlite (DE alternative)

2–5 microns

Cartridge

10–15 microns (some premium cartridges can get closer to 8–10)

Glass Media

5–10 microns (depending on the media and filter design)

Zeolite Media

5–10 microns

Traditional Sand

20–40 microns

For your pool tech’s sanity get cartridges!!!!!
