Well we are in full swing summer travel season and we wanted to pass along a couple of airline travel tips. As if car seats aren't challenging enough, airline travel with car safety seats can seem especially daunting. Below are some tips for traveling with your kids on US commercial airlines. All of these tips apply to using car seats, as holding your child in your lap is nowhere near as safe as properly using a safety seat.

You have rights!

The FAA released an Advisory circular (http://www.faa.gov/documentlibrary/media/advisory_circular/ac_120-87c.pdf) in September 2015 that outlines your rights as an airline traveler with children on a US based carrier. There is a lot of great information in this document. A couple key takeaways are:
A. make sure your seat is approved for aviation use (special
labels required)
B. you may use rear-facing seats (although the language
and airline may make it seem like you can't)
C. IF you buy a ticket for your child and have a seat for
them, the airline SHALL NOT force you to give up your
seat. (If the seat doesn't fit the airline must try to
accommodate in a different seat)
D. If your label is worn off or missing, bring your manual to
show it is safe for air travel
E. Seats requirements
• The CRS should have a solid back and seat,
• The CRS should have internal restraint straps installed
to securely hold the child in the CRS, and
• The CRS must have a label showing approval for
aviation use

These tips summarize the document but we recommend you download, print and take it with you if you fly. If the airlines give you any grief, politely reference this document and ask if they have contradictory information.

We have seen a lot of ads popping back up on Amazon and other online retailers advertising these types of "safety seats" and "safety harnesses". These seats are not only completely UNSAFE but they are illegal. Please do not purchase these types of products. They do not meet any US standards for car seat testing and validation. Often advertised as meeting US standards, the advertiser will cite meaningless standards that apply to quality control and other non-safety measures.
Please be aware when you go to your purchase your child's seat. Make sure it is purchased from a legitimate source, that it is new and that it meets NHSTA standards. If you have any questions regarding this topic or any other safety seat matters, feel free to message us!

Had the pleasure to provide two installs to a couple from Ashburn this weekend. Their beautiful children were very cooperative considering the heat. We were able to get the seat positions flipped, harness rerouted, vehicle and car seats cleaned for this family all without them having to leave their driveway. Thanks Katie and John it was a pleasure!
