Went to do a water test today and the owner “has a pool guy that comes every week”. These were his chemical readings and the guy was there two days ago. His plaster had huge “pits” all throughout and he said it’s been doing that for years. Notice that his calcium is at 80…This should be a minimum of 250, but most pool guys don’t test for calcium hardness, we do. When your calcium is this low, your water is pulling calcium out of the plaster to try and balance itself. Bad chemistry has destroyed this poor guy’s plaster, but luckily he’s switching to us.

The picture on the right is what his pool needs according to the LSI (the most scientific method of balancing chemistry). Yes, you are reading that correctly- he needs 99 lbs of calcium added to his pool! 😳 Obviously we can’t do this all in one visit, but…

Two weeks of daily rain. More rain in the forecast all next week. Your pool chemistry is not where you left it. 🌧️

Here's exactly what's happening under the surface — and why rainy stretches like this one are when pools get into real trouble:

☔ Chlorine is being diluted with every storm. Rain is untreated water. One heavy downpour can drop your free chlorine enough to open the door to algae growth. After two weeks of daily rain, that door has been opened and closed repeatedly — and every time it opens, algae gets another shot.

🔬 pH is dropping toward dangerous levels. Rainwater is naturally acidic — typically sitting around pH 5.5 to 6.5. Your pool wants to stay between 7.4 and 7.6. Every storm is pulling it the wrong direction. Low pH doesn't just feel bad on skin and eyes — it makes your chlorine significantly less effective and turns your water corrosive to surfaces and equipment.

⚖️ Alkalinity is getting destabilized. Alkalinity is your pool's pH buffer. When repeated rain knocks it around, pH becomes a moving target. You can add chlorine all day long and still not get ahead of the problem if your alkalinity isn't where it needs to be first.

🍃 Phosphates are spiking from runoff. Every rainstorm carries fertilizer, grass clippings, dirt, and organic debris directly into your pool. All of it brings phosphates — and phosphates are algae's primary food source. Most homeowners have no idea their phosphate levels are climbing until they're already staring at a green pool.

🟢 Algae doesn't need much of an invitation right now. Low chlorine + dropping pH + phosphate-loaded runoff = ideal conditions for a bloom. Under the right conditions, algae can take a pool from perfectly clear to visibly green in 48 to 72 hours. That's not an exaggeration — we see it happen.

Let's talk about chlorine tabs. 💊

If you're using 3-inch trichlor tabs as your only source of chlorine — you're not alone. Like, 90% of pool owners do this. They're convenient, they dissolve slowly, they smell like a pool is supposed to smell.

Here's the problem nobody tells you about: every single tab you drop in your floater is also loading your water with cyanuric acid (CYA). A little CYA is actually good — it protects your chlorine from burning off in the sun. But when CYA builds up too high, your chlorine stops working properly. Like, at all.

The industry calls it "chlorine lock." Your test strip says you have chlorine. Your pool doesn't care — it's still growing algae anyway.

And here's the fun part 🙃 — there's no chemical fix for high CYA. The only cure is draining a significant portion of your pool and refilling it with fresh water. In Texas. In the summer.
