the simple and easy way to clean your plastic shower curtain (and shower curtain liners) as well as plastic shower mats so that they stay clean and mildew-free.

What you’ll need:

Laundry detergent
1 cup of baking soda
Washing machine
2-3 towels (ideally light coloured or white).
Optional: 10 drops of tea tree oil (which can kill mold and mildew).

Here’s What to do:

Carefully remove the plastic shower curtains from hooks and peel up shower mat, take them to your washing machine (pretty easy so far).
Place them in your washing machine, along with the 2 towels. Add regular detergent and a cup of baking soda (and tea tree oil).
Wash on the gentle cycle
Re-hang the plastic shower curtain to air dry, and hang the shower mat to allow all the water to dry off. The towels can go in the dryer.

Let’s re-cap:

The towels act as a buffer between the washing machine and the delicate plastic curtain. They also assist in scrubbing away dirt and mildew during the washing process. The baking soda is a mild abrasive that will further scrub away the moldy gunk and will also help deodorize any funk that’s been growing in the plastic. Your total time involved here is under 10 minutes. You will feel great in your much cleaner shower!

This can be done 4 times a year. So often we think it’s easier to buy a new item, but hopefully this changes your mind. All they need is a little TLC!

6 Genius Tricks for Wrinkle-Free Clothes
If you're smart about how you wash, you can totally skip the ironing.

Laundry day is a project (the sorting, the pretreating, the care-tag reading, the folding — ugh), and wrinkles are the thorn in a completed load's side. So we asked Carolyn Forte, the director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, for best ways we can all spend less time stooped over the ironing board.

1. Try the wet washcloth trick.
We couldn't live without our trusty irons, but when you're staring at a pile of wrinkled shirts on a super-busy morning, you wish the whole ironing thing could be a little more automated. That's where this trick comes in.

Throw your rumpled outfit into the dryer with a damp washcloth, and run it for about 10 or 15 minutes. The steam emitted from the washcloth with smooth the garments' wrinkles — and offer you a few extra minutes to eat breakfast.

Want to try this tip on a larger load? "Use a hand towel or bath towel instead of a washcloth," says Forte.

2. Do the shake.
It's tempting to toss an armfuls of wet clothes straight into the dryer in as few moves as possible. But twists in your T-shirts and bulky clumps of damp dresses might exit the dryer the exact same way — mussed and wrinkly. So give each item a quick shake before it hits the dryer.

"Separating and shaking eases fabrics back to shape after washing, and helps them tumble better in the dryer, which helps de-wrinkle them, too," says Forte.

3. Reconsider your dryer settings.
"Slower spin speeds and lower temperatures also help minimizes wrinkles — especially in cotton clothes," says Forte. "A too-fast spin can actually 'whip in' the wrinkles already there. On most dryers, the 'casual,' 'normal,' or 'permanent press' settings are designed to reduce rumpling." Check your manual for the best advice for your machine.

4. Don't let dry clothes sit idly.
To avoid time spent slaving over a hot ironing board, don't dawdle when you hear the ping of a completed dryer cycle. If clothes are left to settle, creases will quickly form. But if you'd rather not be at the beck-and-call of your machine, it might have a setting that can help you out.

"Most dryers have extended tumbling cycles to keep wrinkles from forming," says Forte. "Use this setting to keep clothes tumbling intermittently for an hour or more."

5. Spritz instead of press.
Our experts in the GHI have long loved Downy Wrinkle Releaser, which helps ease creases out of clothes, even when you're in a rush. "It relaxes fabrics," says Forte. "You spray it on, smooth and tug the fabric gently, and then let the garment hang to dry. It works best on lightweight cotton and knits — but skip it on fabrics that can get water spots, like silk and rayon."

6. Fold your shirts and sweaters into thirds.
Make like a clothing store associate when you store your favorite items. By folding them into thirds, instead of in half, you'll avoid an unsightly crease down the middle, says Forte.

Tip of the Day # 117: How to clean your Iron

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR IRON:

1. Sprinkle a generous amount of salt onto your ironing board
2. Turn your iron to the highest setting, ensuring that the steam option is set to OFF
3. When heated, iron over the salt--what happens is that the dirt sticks to the salt, leaving nothing but a wonderfully, shiny iron!

It is good to do this every so often to prevent debris or dirt from your iron melting or sticking to your articles of clothing!

SPRING CLEANING TIPS:💡

Get Set for a Successful Spring-Cleaning Spree.🌷
If you’re about to jump into the annual rite of spring-cleaning, here are a few tips that can make it more manageable – and more pleasant – from the start.

Make it fun.🌸
That’s right. Why not look at spring-cleaning as something that will help you feel good about yourself and your fresh, organized home. Which it will! So play your favorite upbeat music. Dance and sing as you go. Get the family involved and plan to do something relaxing afterwards, like watching a movie together or going to the park. Set a timer and play “beat the clock.” See if you can complete several small tasks before the timer goes off. It’s all in how you approach it.

Start by de-cluttering.🌹
You can do this! Be ruthless. If you don’t love it or use it, you don’t need it! You’ve probably heard of the art of Feng Shui. It teaches that if energy can easily flow through a room, your life will be more harmonious and happy. And clutter is an obstacle to this relaxed, calm state. Getting rid of the excess means you’ll have fewer dust magnets, less clutter to look at, and an easier time finding the things you do use. It truly is an effective way to relieve stress.

Donate or sell what you don’t need.🌺
After you’ve gathered the things you no longer need or use, do something worthwhile with the items that are in good condition. If you decide to donate them, consider the local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or a shelter. If you want to sell them, go ahead and set a date for a yard sale. Or, take some digital photos of the items and offer them for sale on an online auction. Just make sure you get them out of your house as soon as possible and don’t store them long-term in your home.

Open windows wide.☀
Give yourself – and your home – a breath of fresh air. Let the sun shine in to give yourself plenty of light. It will be an energy boost as well as a way to see dust and dirt you may have missed otherwise. Get rid of the musty, dusty winter odors and protect yourself from any harsh fumes from cleaning products at the same time.^1

Take it easy on the chemicals.🌻
Speaking of fumes, we are so used to the smell of bleach and harsh cleaners that many of us don’t feel like the house is clean unless it smells of chemicals. In fact, just the opposite is true. You can make your house shine with a few simple supplies you probably already have. Here are just a few examples:

Mild dishwashing liquid is great for removing spills that water alone won’t budge. You can make a simple, all-purpose cleaner by mixing two cups of water with two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. Use it on countertops and other hard surfaces.
Baking soda is a mild abrasive that won’t scratch surfaces. Make a paste of three parts warm water to one part baking soda to scrub kitchen stains or clean the oven. You can make a bathroom cleanser by mixing dishwashing liquid with baking soda until you have a thick paste.
Distilled white vinegar and lemon juice are both excellent for cleaning, deodorizing, and mild bleaching. They are acidic and can get rid of tough soap scum. And you can make a glass cleaner by mixing equal parts vinegar and water, which also works well on most polyurethane-finished wood floors.^2
Of course, there are times when you may need to use bleach or a harsh cleaning product. When you do, use only what you must to get the job done. And be sure to wear rubber gloves and a mask, and ventilate the area well.⚠
Step back and enjoy.🌈
When your spring-cleaning is done, you’ll be able to take pride in your accomplishment. You’ve helped create a clean, fresh, healthy, and efficient environment for yourself and your family. Way to go!🌼
