Many cosmetics can be most successfully removed with products made specifically for their removal, i.e. fingernail polish remover. If such items are not available to you then you might try the following:

Apply a liquid detergent directly to the stain if the material is washable, or dampen the stain and rub synthetic detergent (they have lots of phosphates in them you want to dissolve oily materials and emulsify them) or soap into it until thick suds are formed. Repeat as many times as necessary. When the outline of the stain is gone, rinse thoroughly. Sometimes it helps to let the fabric dry between treatments.

Sponge nonwashable fabrics with cleaning fluid repeatedly until no more color can be removed.

So vacuum cleaners...I still see people with vacuums that when you turn the vacuum on, it spits more dirt into the air than it sucks up. 30 year old vacuums that have a layer of dust on top of it. Can I just say, if you are on a budget, you would be better with a carpet duster. These people generally don't know that there are vacuums that can do a better job...after all, this was a name brand vacuum.

Dirt is actually what destroys the pile in your carpet. If you took some of that dust off the top of your wonderful un-sucking vacuum, put it on a table top (if you want a powerful demo, put it on your granite counter-top) take a quarter and run it back and forth over the dust...what you might notice is that it is cutting the counter-top because there is some pretty dense silicon in that dust, and it cuts like a knife. If your vacuum is unable to pull the dust out of the carpet and you walk on the carpet the dust is breaking down your carpet and pad like termites.

So I don't want to sponsor vacuums, but I did want to tell you a little secret if you are in the market for a vacuum. Get a Kirby. They actually do what they are supposed to. Don't buy one from a door to door guy...those are gonna look like $2000. I don't know too many people who want to spent $2000 on a vacuum. Get it at a momma/pop vacuum store or get it on Ebay. They may be lightly used, they come with a warranty, and they will still clean better then any other brand new vacuum on the market. Cost? $300-$500 and it will last you forever. They are pretty much all stainless steel. Worried about the weight and getting a workout? Don't worry, they are self propelled after Generation 3. Get the attachments, you will love vacuuming the car because...well, it really sucks! With a good vacuum and regular carpet cleaning, your carpet worth thousands of dollars will last a very-very, long time!

A lot of times I hear from people, we don't want to have to buy a new carpet, is there anyway you can get the stain out. After we are done people tell us it looks like brand new. We recommend cleaning your carpets 2 to 3 times a year, and stain guard every other year...this will keep your carpet looking cleaner longer and will increase the resistance of the tougher stains like wine, coffee, and damage caused by sun bleaching or pet urine.

Yes! We do dry clean oriental and other types of throw rugs. We will check for colorfastness to make sure the colors don't bleed. The backing (its firmness that keeps the carpet from bunching up while being cleaned) on the carpet also plays a part in the cleaning process. Give us a call, we do it all!

One of the great advantages of dry cleaning a carpet is the rotary works as a scrubbing agent instead of having to soak your carpet and your pad with hot water. The dry cleaning solution has a two step process, the cleaning agent and then the powder effect. The powder effect wicks the remaining oil and dirt (think mud mask for pores) and flakes off into a fine powder that is vacuumed up at your convenience.

The results: Faster drying carpet, the glue in the pile of the carpet is not worn-out or warped by steam or hot water, the shine and luster stays in the carpet, and there are no surprises like you have with a steam cleaning where you think the carpet is clean and then hours later when the carpet finally dries the dirt and oil from the pad finally wicks up to the surface almost like magic. Most people see a Kool-Aid stain and think all is lost, but if the stain is pretty new there are things that you can do:

Always sponge such stains promptly with cool water. This simple treatment will remove many of them. Or soak them with cool water for 30 minutes or more. Some may need to be soaked overnight. After sponging or soaking, work undiluted liquid detergent into the stain and rinse. If the stain remains, you will have to use a bleach*. Old stains and stains that have been set by heat are in the "difficult-if-not-impossible" category.

On nonwashable materials, sponge the stain with cool water or put a sponge over it and sq**rt cool water through the cloth with a small syringe or medicine dropper. If this does not remove the stain, work liquid detergent into it and rinse. A final sponging with alcohol* helps to remove the detergent, and the fabric dries faster. Dilute the alcohol with two parts of water; test colors to see if it is safe for dyes. If the detergent treatment does not remove the stain, you will have to try bleach.
For fresher stains, a long soak with detergent suds often does the trick. If a bleach* is needed, use a chlorine bleach if the material will stand it, or a color remover.

For Kool-Aid-type stains containing coloring, sponging with plain cool water and following some of the above suggestions will enable you to dilute and reduce the effect of the stain depending on the concentration of stain, how long the stain has been there, what attempts were made to remove the stain, and the fabric the stain has come in contact with.

Another trick would be to "wick" the stain up buy placing a wet towel over the stain after the majority has been blotted up with a sponge. Make sure the towel is at least folded in half. Put a hot iron on low and place on wet towel. The steam will "wick" the coloring into the towel.
