Laredo, TX - Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño announced that the City of Laredo will host a public town hall on August 11 to gather community input on the potential impact of data centers as concerns continue to grow over water resources, energy demand, and long-term infrastructure.

Speaking during a press conference alongside State Representative Richard Ray Raymond, the mayor emphasized that protecting Laredo’s water supply remains one of the city’s highest priorities. While highlighting recent agreements that secured an additional 90 million gallons of water per day for the city, Treviño cautioned that large-scale data centers built elsewhere in the region could still impact shared aquifers and regional water availability.

Treviño stressed that the city’s position is not anti-business, but rather focused on ensuring growth is responsible, transparent, and sustainable. He said he has directed the city manager to develop a local regulatory framework but believes statewide standards are also needed so communities are not left navigating the issue independently.

The mayor also emphasized that no city decisions regarding data centers will be made without a full City Council quorum and public input.

The public town hall, hosted by Councilwoman 7 Vanessa Perez, is scheduled for August 11 at the Fasken Center 6:00PM, where residents will have an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and learn more about proposed data center developments and their potential impact on the region.

‼️BREAKING‼️LAREDO RANKED THE 6TH SAFEST BIG CITY IN AMERICA‼️

Laredo, TX - Laredo has been ranked the 6th safest large city in the United States and is one of only two Texas cities to make SmartAsset’s list of the nation’s 10 safest big cities.

The study examined 83 U.S. cities with populations of 250,000 or more, evaluating each using a combination of violent crime rates, property crime rates, traffic fatality rates, and FEMA disaster risk.

According to SmartAsset, Laredo recorded:

3.7 violent crimes per 1,000 residents
14.6 property crimes per 1,000 residents
9.1 traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents
A “Relatively Moderate” FEMA disaster risk rating

The report also noted that Texas was the only state to have cities ranked among both the 10 safest and the 10 least safe, with Plano ( #2) and Laredo ( #6) representing the safest, while Dallas and Houston were listed among the least safe.

The rankings were based on a composite score measuring public safety, traffic safety, and disaster risk across major U.S. cities.

‼️BREAKING‼️DAISY CAMPOS-RODRIGUEZ FILES FOR DISTRICT 2 COMEBACK BID ‼️

Laredo, TX - Former District 2 Councilmember Daisy Campos-Rodriguez has officially filed to run for the District 2 City Council seat, launching a bid to return to City Hall after losing the office through a lengthy election contest.

In a social media announcement, Campos-Rodriguez said her commitment to South Laredo has never changed despite a civil court decision that overturned the results of the 2022 election. She highlighted infrastructure improvements and funding secured during her time on the council and said she has continued serving the community through her work with the Webb County Public Health Department.

Campos-Rodriguez said her campaign is focused on giving South Laredo a stronger voice at City Hall, adding that she is running because she believes District 2 deserves to be a priority and not an afterthought.

Context

Campos-Rodriguez originally won the 2022 District 2 election by a narrow margin. However, Ricardo “Richie” Rangel challenged the results in court, arguing that illegal votes had been cast. After reviewing the evidence, a visiting district judge determined that enough illegal votes had been cast in favor of Campos-Rodriguez to change the outcome and declared Rangel the rightful winner. The Fourth Court of Appeals later affirmed that decision, and in January 2024, the Texas Supreme Court declined to overturn the ruling, allowing Rangel to take office.

The appellate court concluded that the number of illegal votes attributed to Campos-Rodriguez exceeded her margin of victory, making Rangel the lawful winner under the Texas Election Code.
