REGULATION SUMMARY:
Effective July 19, 2021,

New U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations will go into effect that requires Dedicated Purpose Pool Pumps (DP3) manufactured in or imported into the U.S. to meet minimum energy-efficiency standards.

The standards apply to all pool pumps with a Hydraulic Horsepower (HHP) rating ≤ of 2.5 HHP, with some limited exceptions. HHP is approximately 50% of the pump motor’s total horsepower (THP) rating.

The Good News: The regulations are written in a way that makes it relatively easy for variable-speed pumps to meet the requirements.

What to be aware of:
This new ruling also dictates that any new pump installed in 2021 must be a variable speed for inground pools. Please understand that if a pump is a fixed HP that it can no longer be installed in a pool. This doesn't mean that your current working HP Pool Pump needs to be torn out. But this does mean if you need to replace your current pool pump you must use a Variable speed pump (VSP) as its replacement.

EXEMPTIONS:
The following classes of pool pumps are exempt from meeting the minimum energy-efficiency standards:

• Waterfall Pumps that operate at ≤ 30 feet of head with a maximum speed of ≤ 1,800 RPM
• Integral Sand- and Cartridge-Filter Pool Pumps (Above Ground pump systems)
• Storable Electric Spa / Rigid Electric Spa Pumps
• Pumps with 3-Phase Motors
