Upgrade Your Water Quality with a Water Softener
Hey there, Lancaster County homeowners! Joe the Plumber here, and today, I want to talk to you about something that can make a big difference in your home—your water quality. If you've been dealing with stubborn white spots on your dishes, dry skin, or soap that just won’t lather, you might have hard water. The good news? A water softener can fix that and so much more!
What is Hard Water Doing to Your Home?
Hard water is packed with minerals like calcium and magnesium. While they won’t hurt you directly, they sure can do a number on your plumbing, appliances, and even your skin.
Here are some common headaches hard water causes:
* White mineral deposits on faucets, fixtures, and shower doors
* Soap scum buildup in sinks, tubs, and washing machines
* Dry skin and brittle hair (ever feel like your shampoo isn’t working?)
* Spots on dishes even after they’ve been through the dishwasher
* Reduced water pressure due to buildup in pipes
* Faded or rough-feeling laundry because of mineral deposits in the wash
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Many homes in Lancaster County have hard water, but a water softener can change that.
How a Water Softener Makes Life Easier
When you install a water softener, you’re not just improving your water—you’re making life easier and more cost-effective.
Here’s how:
Longer-lasting appliances – Hard water buildup clogs pipes and forces appliances like your dishwasher and water heater to work harder, wearing them out faster. A water softener reduces scale buildup, helping them last longer and run more efficiently.
Better water flow & efficiency – Over time, hard water buildup inside your pipes reduces the space water can flow through. This means your system has to work harder to pump water through, leading to decreased water pressure and higher energy costs. Soft water keeps everything flowing smoothly.
Softer skin and healthier hair – Say goodbye to itchy, dry skin! Soft water helps soap rinse off more easily, leaving your skin and hair feeling clean and hydrated.
Brighter, longer-lasting laundry – Clothes washed in soft water keep their color longer and feel softer. Plus, they won’t wear out as quickly from mineral buildup.
Less soap and detergent needed – Soft water allows soap to lather and rinse better, so you can use less shampoo, body wash, dish soap, and laundry detergent to get the job done.
Eco-friendly benefits – Using less soap and energy means you’re doing the environment a favor too!
Time to Ditch the Hard Water?
If you’re ready to stop fighting with mineral deposits, dull laundry, and dry skin, a water softener might be the perfect solution for your home. I’ve installed plenty of these for homeowners around Lancaster County, and the difference is night and day.
We recommend customers do maintenance on the water softener brine tank including checking salt levels, and preventing salt bridges. This is what customers can do on their own, and Joe will make these recommendations when he installs the water softener. If bringing salt into your basement is a chore you can schedule this service to bring salt to you.
✅ Clean the Brine Tank
Turn off the water softener and unplug it for safety.
Remove the salt from the tank to give you access to the interior.
Use a long-handled brush or a sponge to scrub the inside of the tank, removing any salt buildup or residue.
If there’s any sludge or solid buildup at the bottom of the tank, scoop it out carefully.
Once cleaned, wipe the tank dry, refill it with fresh salt, and plug the system back in.
✅ Check salt levels
Open the lid of the brine tank and visually inspect the salt levels. The salt should be at least a few inches above the water line.
If the salt is below the water line or low overall, add more salt (preferably high-quality evaporated salt) until it reaches the recommended level.
Avoid overfilling as the system needs space to allow the salt to dissolve properly during the regeneration cycle.
✅ Prevent salt bridges
Joe the Plumber recommends using solar salt. Nuggets are more likely to stick together when they get wet.
Salt bridges occur when using nuggets, and if that happens this is what you can do. When salt forms a hard crust in the brine tank, preventing water from dissolving it properly.
To prevent this:
Gently tap the side of the brine tank with a hammer or other tool to check for any hard crusts. If you hear a hollow sound, it might indicate a salt bridge.
If a bridge forms, carefully break it apart with a broom handle or similar tool.
Avoid using too much salt at once, as overfilling the tank can contribute to bridging.
Regularly check for bridges, especially in hot or humid climates where they are more likely to form.
This routine will keep your water softener working efficiently and extend its lifespan.
