Septic systems are like small-scale wastewater treatment systems that require a well-balanced environment in order to perform perfectly. Little things, like doing several loads of laundry back to back, can disrupt the calm conditions of your tank, leading to clogging or issues with leach fields. Both conventional and aerobic treatment units use countless microorganisms to digest and break down organic waste. To ensure these microorganisms remain healthy and active, tank treatments are required.

Our expert technicians will determine what (if any) treatments your system needs. We introduce new “good bacteria” as needed into your system, using DEP-approved products, helping to protect those microorganisms. This ensures system functionality and proper breakdown of organic waste.

August 26th is National Toilet Paper Day! Here are 5 fun facts about toilet paper:
1. The first recorded use of toilet paper was in 6th Century China. By the 14th Century, the Chinese government was mass-producing it. It wasn't until 1935 that a manufacturer was able to promise Splinter-Free Toilet Paper.

2. The first toilet paper was developed in England in 1880 and sold not on a roll but as individual sheets in a box. The average roll now has 333 sheets.

3. Historically, what you use to wipe depended on your income level. Wealthy Romans used wool soaked in rose water and French royalty used lace. Other things that were used before toilet paper include: Hay, corn cobs, sticks, stones, sand, moss, h**p, wool, husks, fruit peels, ferns, sponges, seashells, knotted ropes, and broken pottery.

4. 70-75% of the world still doesn't use toilet paper because it is too expensive or there is not sufficient plumbing.

5. In a recent survey when asked what necessity they would bring to a desert island, 49% of people said toilet paper before food.

Q: I would like a garbage disposal in my home. Can I just install one?
A: Septics need to be designed to handle the disposal of food. When you have a garbage disposal on a system that it is not designed for you can overload your system with food waste. You want the bacteria in your tank to eat the waste coming from the waste water. The live bacteria will breakdown the waste in the tank to sludge that will be eventually pumped out with your annual maintenance.

Your water usage inside the house can certainly affect your septic system. Here are some tips to conserve water:

💩 Keep your showers to a minimum
💩 Space out laundry, do not do multiple loads in one day
💩 Look for leaks in your yard, sprinkler system and inside the house
💩 Turn off water while you are brushing your teeth, shaving or lathering shampoo in your hair
💩 Make sure when running your dishwasher or washing machine that it is a full load rather than more smaller loads

Q: I never had to pump my septic, when will I know when to pump it?

A: Obvious signs that you need to pump would be if you are having backup into your home, the water and toilets are going down slowly or the level is high in your tank. Once you pump out your septic tank it will fill up as you use water and flush, when the level reaches the outlet pipe it should stay at that level. If you are checking the level in the tank it should be 3-4 inches below the inlet pipe; that is the normal operating level.

Regular maintenance on your septic can be very beneficial to your system and your wallet. The normal operating level is based on where the outlet pipe is exiting the tank on the opposite end. When looking into the inlet side of the tank, the level would appear to be 2-4 inches below the inlet pipe. It’s important to stay on a regular pumping schedule to make sure that your septic stays at normal operating level. Pumping your septic is like changing the oil in your car.
