Do bat houses actually work?
It depends on what you’re using them for.
It’s a common question, and while they’re well-intentioned, they’re often misunderstood, especially here in Michigan.
Here’s the reality:
• Bat houses can be useful during the warmer months
• They typically don’t provide the conditions bats need to survive a Michigan winter
• Bats need deep, insulated, protected environments (caves, mines, structures)
A bat house alone won’t resolve an active issue in your home.
If bats have already chosen your house, they’ve found a warm, stable place they trust, and they’re very unlikely to leave it for a bat house.
Bat houses can still be a great addition to a property. They’re a good way to support bats and give them a place to roost during the summer, just not a replacement for proper exclusion.
The right approach is:
• Safely and legally exclude the bats when timing allows
• Then install a bat house as a summer roosting option after entry points are sealed
As Bat Standards Certified professionals, everything we do is focused on safe, humane exclusion. We never harm bats, and we truly care about the role they play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, including natural insect control.
If you’re dealing with bats or just have questions, we’re always happy to help and walk you through the right approach.
