If there’s one thing we’ve learned traveling full-time in our RV this year, it’s to expect the unexpected when it comes to weather!

We’ve experienced:
A tornado in Topeka that sent us into shelter
Unexpected snow in Wyoming
Extra rain in Oregon
Sandstorms in New Mexico and Tucson

And now Arizona is under its first tornado watch since 2010! 😳

The watch includes Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona, Kingman, and Winslow until 6 PM Arizona time.

The last Arizona tornado watch was on October 6, 2010 — the same day a tornado derailed a train just west of Flagstaff.

Full-time RV life definitely keeps things interesting!

WHAT’S COMING OUT OF YOUR GRAY TANK?

Many RVers think the black tank is the “bad” one — but the gray tank can be just as nasty, or even worse!

Your gray tank collects water from sinks and showers, but it also holds food particles, soap buildup, hair, skin, and other debris. When RVers leave the gray valve open, the liquids slowly drain out while the solids stay behind. Those leftovers start to rot, clump up, and grow mold in the hot, damp tank.

That’s when you start seeing chunks coming out… along with odors and potential clogs.

Tip: Keep both black and gray valves closed until you’re ready to dump. It helps prevent buildup, bad smells, and tank trouble.

How to Keep Your RV Tanks From Smelling

RV tank odors are caused by waste buildup, sludge, and decomposing material, not a lack of chemicals. Over time, additives and poor flushing turn solid waste into a thick, sticky sludge that traps odors and is hard to remove.

What Actually Helps
(Best results after a professional cleaning)
• Use more water
• After dumping, prime the tank with 2–5 gallons of fresh water and Pine-Sol/Calgon mix
• Dump tanks when 75–100% full so waste exits with enough force.
• Run the black tank rinser while dumping, but know it’s not enough on its own.
• Use a reverse flush valve (like a Flush King) for a deeper rinse.

What Makes Odors Worse
• Products that break down solids into sludge, creating a smelly “pancake batter” mess.
• Gray tanks left open allow liquids to drain while solids stick and rot.
• Relying on onboard flush systems alone — they can’t remove heavy buildup.

The Truth About Chemicals
Adding more tank chemicals does not fix odors — it usually makes them worse. They mask smells temporarily while contributing to long-term buildup.

• Proper water use + good dumping habits
• Avoid sludge-creating additives
• Regular professional tank cleanings, which use high-pressure equipment far stronger than onboard systems
• Use on board black tank rinser while dumping then King Flush to back flush
