The official start of Hurricane Season is a few days away. While we hope the weather remains favorable, now is the time to make emergency plans including how you will prepare your septic system in the event of a storm.

☁Install a backflow valve on the sewer line to prevent sewage from backing up into the home.
☁Install check valves on all drains in the home to prevent floodwaters from coming in through the drains.
☁Disconnect any downspouts and gutters from the sewer line to prevent them from overflowing.
☁Raise the elevation of the septic tank and sewage treatment system so that they are above the projected flood level.
☁Anchor the septic tank to prevent it from floating out of the ground.

The drain field is a sensitive and crucial component of your septic system.

Tips to care for your drain field:
Watch Vegetation: Plant only grass over the drain field. Tree and shrub roots can infiltrate and damage pipes. Be mindful of unusually lush or green patches, which can indicate effluent surfacing.

Keep it Clear: Avoid driving vehicles, parking, or building anything over the drain field area. Compaction damages pipes and reduces soil permeability.

Manage Water: Divert rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, and patios away from the drain field to prevent oversaturation.

It's always a good idea to give your system a break by reducing the amount of water it receives. One way to do this is to take shorter showers and baths, and to stagger shower use with some done in the morning and some at night. Repair any leaks as quick as possible to keep strain off your septic system and save you money down the road!

Over time, solid waste (sludge and scum) builds up in a septic tank. If not removed, solids can flow into the drain field, clogging pipes and soil pores, leading to premature failure.

Most tanks need pumping every 3 to 5 years, sometimes more often depending on tank size, household size, and usage.

Is your septic system due for routine maintenance? Spring is a great time to schedule pumping.
