Phillips 66, in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana and the City of Lake Charles’ Parks and Recreation Department, is thrilled to announce an initiative aimed at enhancing swim safety for local youth. Phillips 66 is investing $25,000 in learn-to-swim scholarships, helping 450 children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters and City of Lake Charles summer camps gain essential swim skills and water safety knowledge.
Additionally, a community swim safety fair is being held at the Donald Ray Stevens Park (Goosport Pool), 1619 Cessford St., Lake Charles, on Saturday, May 9 at 9 a.m. where community members can learn tips for swimming safely. The fair is free and open to the public, offering mini swim lessons with certified lifeguards, open swim, safety education, hot dogs and family-friendly activities.
In Louisiana, drowning is the third leading cause of death among children ages one to 14. Recognizing the vital importance of swim education, especially in regions surrounded by water, the partnership aims to equip children with the skills necessary to enjoy water activities safely and confidently.
“This initiative reflects our long-standing commitment to safety, inside our gates and across the communities where we live and work. Phillips 66 hopes this community swim safety initiative will prevent drowning and raise awareness for swim safety. By partnering with the City of Lake Charles and Big Brothers Big Sisters, we hope to make a lasting impact by providing skills that can save lives,” said Megan Hartman, Phillips 66 Sr. Manager of Public Affairs.
The City of Lake Charles’ Parks and Recreation Department, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana and Ward 3 Recreation will facilitate swim lessons at local community pools, offering a structured and safe environment for learning. The organizations identified participants and will provide ongoing support throughout the program. This collaboration ensures that the scholarships reach those who can benefit most, fostering a sense of community and inclusion.

By working together, we’re giving our children the opportunity to learn essential swim skills that can save lives while building confidence in and around the water. It’s a wonderful place where kids, families and even our older generations can come together to enjoy a safe, fun and positive experience,” added Lake Charles Mayor Marshall Semien.

We want to make sure everyone feels safe around water.
