Mosquito season is here in East Tennessee—and if you wait until you’re getting bitten, you’re already behind.
Our new infographic, “Break the Cycle: Stop Mosquitoes Before They Bite,” shows how to target mosquitoes at every stage of their life cycle—from eggs to adults—so you can take back your yard.
Here’s the key:

• Dump standing water every 3–5 days (birdbaths, buckets, plant saucers)
• Treat areas that can’t be drained with mosquito “dunks”
• Keep gutters clean to eliminate hidden breeding spots
• Trim shrubs and mow regularly to reduce resting areas
• Use fans on patios—mosquitoes are weak fliers
Small changes can make a big difference—but if mosquitoes are still taking over your yard, we’re here to help.

Protect your home from unwanted guests this season

Clover mites may be tiny, but they can become a big nuisance quickly. These reddish-brown pests don't bite, but they can leave stubborn red stains on your curtains, carpets, and furniture if crushed.
The best way to handle an infestation is to stop it before it starts. Check out our "Defense Perimeter" guide below to learn how to seal entry points, create protective buffer zones, and maintain your yard to keep these mites away.

DOES MY BIRD FEEDER REALLY ATTRACT RATS, OR IS THAT JUST A NEIGHBORHOOD MYTH?

At Epituer Pest Solutions, we love a good backyard habitat, but here’s the truth: It’s not a myth.
While the birds are eating at the "table," they are messy guests! Fallen seeds, hulls, and suet crumbles create a 24/7 buffet on the ground. To a rodent, your bird feeder is basically a 5-star restaurant with an "All You Can Eat" sign.

Here’s how to keep the birds and lose the rodents:

• Switch to "No-Waste" Seed: Use hulled seeds so there’s no debris left behind.
• Add a Tray: Attach a wide tray under your feeder to catch falling bits.
• The 5-Gallon Rule: Store your bulk seed in a metal bin with a tight lid. Plastic bags are basically "gift wrap" for a hungry rat.
• Clean Up Daily: A quick sweep under the feeder before sundown removes the "midnight snack" for nocturnal visitors.

Are you seeing more "scurrying" than "singing" in your backyard lately? Don’t let a few uninvited guests ruin your view.
Call Epituer Pest Solutions and we’ll help you protect your home without spoiling the birdwatching.

Ants Are on the Move in Knoxville. The April Scout Surge Is Here

As temperatures rise across Knoxville, April marks the start of what pest professionals call the “Scout Surge.” This is when ant colonies send out worker ants to search for food, water, and new nesting sites… and your home is at the top of their list.
If you're seeing a few ants inside, don’t ignore it. Those “scouts” are laying down scent trails that can quickly lead to a full-blown infestation.

What This Means for You:
• A few ants today can turn into hundreds tomorrow
• Kitchens, bathrooms, and entry points are prime targets
• DIY sprays often make the problem worse by scattering colonies

What You Can Do:
• Keep surfaces clean and dry
• Seal cracks and entry points
• Call a professional before the colony expands

At Epituer Pest Solutions, we don’t just treat ants—we eliminate the source and stop the colony at its core.
Schedule your inspection today and stay ahead of the surge.

Keep the Pests Out: Your Knoxville Rodent Proofing Guide

Seeing signs of uninvited guests in your East Tennessee home? Don't wait for a full-blown infestation. Effective rodent control starts with exclusion—permanently sealing them out before they even get in.
Check out these professional tips to identify activity and secure your home:
• The Coin Rule: If a mouse can fit its head through a hole the size of a dime, the rest of its body will follow! For rats, a quarter-sized opening is all they need.
• Know Your Droppings: Identifying whether you're dealing with a house mouse, Norway rat, or even cockroaches is the first step to the right solution.
• Pro-Grade Materials: Skip the expandable foam! Rodents can chew right through it. Use copper stuf-fit or 1/4-inch hardware cloth for a permanent fix.
• High-Tech Tracking: Use a UV light to spot fluorescent urine trails and find exactly where they are entering and traveling.
• Strategic Prevention: Keep pet food in sealed containers and never leave bowls out overnight.

10 Most Common Ways Bed Bugs Enter Your Home (You Might Be Surprised)

Bed bugs are one of the most frustrating pests homeowners deal with because they don’t show up because your home is dirty — they show up because they are great hitchhikers.

Here are the 10 most common ways bed bugs get inside homes:

Traveling and staying in hotels or vacation rentals is the #1 way bed bugs spread. They can easily hide in luggage and clothing.

Buying used or thrifted clothing without washing and drying on high heat first.

Bringing home secondhand furniture, especially couches, mattresses, and upholstered chairs.

Backpacks, purses, and gym bags that are set on floors, beds, or public seating.

Workplaces, schools, and shared waiting areas where people sit close together.

Visitors and guests who may unknowingly bring bed bugs with them.

Shared laundry facilities where bed bugs can transfer between clothing or baskets.

Riding in rideshares, taxis, or public transportation.

Living in apartments, condos, or townhomes where bed bugs can move between units through walls and baseboards.

Used storage items or boxes stored in infested environments.

The best defense is early detection and prevention. Inspect hotel rooms when traveling, wash travel clothes immediately, and carefully check used furniture before bringing it home.

If you suspect bed bugs in your home, don’t wait until the problem gets worse. Professional treatment early can save you time, money, and stress.

Pet Owners: Don’t Forget About Fleas & Ticks in February

Just because its winter doesn’t mean fleas and ticks are completely gone in East Tennessee.
On warmer February days, ticks can become active — and fleas can survive indoors all winter long.

Here’s what homeowners with pets should be doing now:

• Wash pet bedding regularly
• Vacuum floors and furniture frequently
• Keep yard leaf litter cleaned up
• Trim back wooded edges around your property
• Stay consistent with vet-recommended prevention

Many spring infestations actually begin with activity that starts in late winter.
If wildlife, stray animals, or rodents are around your property, they can introduce fleas and ticks long before summer arrives.
A little prevention now protects your pets — and your home — later.

If you’re concerned about flea or tick pressure around your property, Epituer Pest Solutions is here to help.

Commercial Pest Control Tip for Knoxville Area Businesses

Exterior conditions around your building play a huge role in pest activity. Many infestations start outside before pests ever make their way indoors.

Here are common exterior issues that can attract unwanted pests to commercial properties:

1. Vegetation touching the building

Bushes, tree limbs, and ivy that contact your structure create a direct highway for ants, spiders, and rodents. Keep all vegetation trimmed back at least 12–18 inches from walls and rooflines.

2. Clogged or dirty gutters

Gutters filled with leaves and debris hold moisture and organic matter—perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes, ants and exterior cockroaches. Routine cleaning helps eliminate standing water and nesting areas.

3. Leaf and debris buildup on flat roofs

Flat commercial roofs often collect leaves and organic debris that hold moisture and create harborage for insects such as ants and exterior cockroaches. Regular roof inspections and cleanings help prevent hidden pest nesting areas from developing above your business.

4. Mulch depth and placement

Mulch should be no more than 2–3 inches deep and kept a few inches away from the foundation. Excessive mulch retains moisture and attracts ants, and other pests close to your building.

5. Dumpster and waste area maintenance

Overflowing dumpsters, open lids, and food debris are major pest magnets. Keep dumpster lids closed, schedule routine cleanings, and maintain a clean pad area to reduce flies, rodents, and cockroach activity.

6. Exterior lighting

Bright exterior lights placed directly above entry doors attract flying insects at night, which then attract spiders and other pests. Consider positioning lights away from doorways when possible.
7 General exterior maintenance

Loose siding, gaps around doors, poor drainage, and clutter near the building all create harborage areas for pests.
Proactive exterior maintenance is one of the best ways to prevent infestations before they start. A strong exterior defense keeps your business protected year-round.
