Love bug season is in full swing across Central Florida. If you've been on I-4 lately, you already know.

These are not a pest control call. They don't bite, sting, or carry disease. But they show up twice a year in numbers that are hard to believe. Left on your car too long, their bodies are acidic enough to eat through paint.

There's also a lot of misinformation about where they came from. The story that UF engineered them as a mosquito control experiment is false. They arrived from Central America on their own, following the Gulf Coast northward in the 1940s.

We put together a breakdown of what love bugs actually are, why highways get hit hardest, when to expect them, and how to protect your paint before they do damage.

Worth a read if you're in the middle of it πŸ‘‡

Researchers at the University of Florida have been tracking kissing bugs across the state for over a decade. Their findings, published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, are worth knowing about as late spring gets underway.

Kissing bugs were collected from 23 Florida counties. About 30 percent tested positive for the parasite that causes Chagas disease, and roughly a third were found inside homes. These insects are nocturnal and enter through small gaps and openings. Standard insect repellent does not work on them.

We follow this kind of research so we can give our customers the most informed service possible. If you have questions about what you are seeing around your home, give us a call.

Snakes get a bad rap. Most of the time, they've earned it for nothing.

Florida has around 50 native snake species. Only 6 are venomous. The other 44 are not only harmless but actively working to make your yard, garden, and neighborhood a healthier place to live.

Here's what most people don't know: snakes are one of nature's most efficient pest controllers. They keep rodent populations in check, reduce insect numbers, and help maintain the balance of the local food chain. Remove them from the picture and the ecosystem starts to feel it fast.

🐍 The good ones working for you

Black Racer β€” That fast, shiny black snake darting across your driveway? It's keeping your rodent population down. Leave it be.

Corn Snake (Red Rat Snake) β€” Docile, colorful, and a natural predator of rats and mice. Farmers have trusted them for generations.

Yellow Rat Snake β€” A skilled climber found in trees and outbuildings. Where they live, rodents don't.

Rough Green Snake β€” Slender and bright green, nearly invisible in the shrubs. Feeds almost entirely on insects. Completely harmless.

Kingsnake β€” This one actively hunts and eats venomous snakes and is immune to their venom. One of the best things you can have living in your yard.

🌿 Why they matter beyond your yard

Snakes are a critical part of Florida's food chain. They control prey populations that would otherwise overpopulate and damage crops, gardens, and the broader ecosystem. They're also prey themselves for hawks and owls. Every species in that web depends on balance, and snakes sit right in the middle of it.

⚠️ The one rule that applies to ALL snakes

Venomous or not, the rule never changes: observe from a distance and leave it alone. Even nonvenomous snakes will bite if cornered or threatened. If a snake is inside your home, call a professional. Do not attempt to handle it yourself.

🚨 Florida's venomous snakes β€” know what to look for:

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake β€” Large, diamond pattern, rattle at the tail. Florida's most dangerous.
Pygmy Rattlesnake β€” Small but venomous. Sounds like a buzzing insect.
Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin) β€” Thick, dark, near water. White mouth interior.
Eastern Coral Snake β€” Red, yellow, black bands. Red touch yellow, kill a fellow.
Copperhead β€” Hourglass bands, copper and tan. Found mostly in northwest Florida.

Tick season is here, and this year it's serious.

ER visits for tick bites are at their highest level in nearly a decade, according to new CDC data released this month. Nationally, that's 71 out of every 100,000 emergency room visits, more than double the historic average for this time of year.

Here in Central Florida, ticks are active year-round. Warmer winters and an early spring in 2026 have experts forecasting record activity. If you're spending time outside in your yard, on trails, or at the park, check yourself, your kids, and your pets every time you come in.

A few things worth knowing:

Ticks aren't just in the woods. They live in lawns, mulch beds, and along fence lines. The blacklegged tick, which carries Lyme disease, is common in Florida. The Lone Star tick, also present here, can trigger Alpha-gal syndrome, a serious allergic reaction to red meat and dairy. Ticks generally need to be attached for 36 hours or more before transmitting most diseases, so finding them early makes a real difference.

If you want to reduce tick activity around your property, we can help. Give us a call.

Heads up, Central Florida!

Tussock moth caterpillars are back, and they're dropping out of oak trees right now across the area. Seminole County has already issued alerts.

These fuzzy white and yellow caterpillars look harmless but touching them (or even their cocoons) can cause painful, itchy rashes. If you have oak trees in your yard, watch where you walk, and keep the kids and pets clear underneath.

A few things to know:
β€’ They're seasonal and will be mostly gone by late April/early May
β€’ Don't spray your trees if you can avoid it. They're a food source for birds and spraying does more harm than good.

This one's just nature doing its thing, not really a pest control call. But if you're seeing other unwanted visitors around your home this spring, we're here.

🌿 Spring Pest Season Is Here

Three pests that spike every April and what to watch for:

🐜 Fire Ants
Warmer soil temps send colonies expanding. Watch for new mounds in your yard, especially after rain.

🦟 Mosquitoes
Breeding season starts now. Any standing water, even a bottle cap, is enough. Dump it.

πŸͺ³ Cockroaches
German roaches thrive in the humidity spike. If you're seeing them during the day, you already have an infestation.

Early action beats a full treatment every time. Got questions about what's showing up around your property? Drop it in the comments. πŸ‘‡
