Luzerne and Wyoming counties were under a flood watch late last week, and parts of the valley saw a flash flood warning. The alerts have lifted. The water in some basements has not.

If you took on water, it is still in there:

A toilet or a supply line does not give much warning before it turns your bathroom into a pool.

And because bathrooms sit over floors and ceilings, that water travels fast.

If it happens:

🔵 Shut off the valve behind the toilet or at the main.
🔵 Do not use that bathroom until it is checked.
🔵 Get standing water up quickly, it is already soaking into the subfloor.

Standing water on your carpet does not always mean you lose it. Sometimes it does. The difference is how fast you move.

What decides it:

🔵 Clean water dried within a day or two, the carpet and pad often can be saved.
🔵 Water that sat for days usually means the pad comes out at least.
🔵 Sewage or flood water, the carpet goes, no exceptions.

The worst move is letting a wet carpet sit and hoping it dries on its own. That is how you get mold and a smell you cannot beat.
