State officials confirmed Michigan’s first detection of the Asian longhorned tick, an invasive pest which carries disease and presents a major risk to cattle.

On June 13, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that two tick nymphs were found during surveillance at Grand Mere State Park in Berrien County. Calvin University research students made the discovery.

Officials said the tiny tick – measuring about 1 mm wide – poses a disease risk to all birds and mammals. However, the potential impact to livestock is a major concern for the agricultural sector.

Spring is here, and while we know you're eager to start sprucing up your outdoor space, we politely and respectfully urge you to BUZZ OFF with your yard work. 🐝

70% of native bees nest underground in the colder months, while 30% lay eggs in natural, hollow stems...which means many important pollinators are still hibernating. Show them some love and respect by delaying your garden and yard work for a few more weeks.
