That pool reflecting pool will never clear using gallons 🤦♂️
Well… that escalated.
This took a little time to answer properly. If we knew it was going to travel this far, we would’ve advertised better 😝
We made a quick joke about the green reflecting pool, and apparently the internet showed up with snacks, folding chairs, expert witnesses, pool guys, chemists, historians, political commentators, and at least three people who are personally mad at algae.
So before the comment section turns into a water treatment cage match, let’s walk it back a little and talk about what may actually be going on.
First off, we’re not taking a side. Water does not care who is in office. Algae does not vote. Pumps do not read comment sections. Chemistry is undefeated.
The truth is, none of us have enough information from a short video to fully judge the job. We don’t have the plans, maintenance logs, pump specs, chemical records, coating specs, water tests, approval process, or full timeline. In our industry, those details matter a lot.
The biggest question is simple: what is the reflecting pool actually being operated as?
A swimming pool is built for people to get in. That means sanitizer levels, pH control, filtration, turnover rates, health code rules, and constant testing.
A reflecting pool is usually built to look good, reflect monuments, and not become pea soup on national television. People may walk near it or even step into it, but that does not automatically mean it is treated like a public swimming pool.
A pond or natural water feature is different again. That is more about managing an ecosystem: sunlight, nutrients, birds, runoff, sediment, temperature, aeration, and plant or algae life.
Same green water. Very different playbooks.
That’s why comments like “just dump shock in it,” “just drain it,” or “throw some algaecide in there” are a little like telling a mechanic, “Just make the engine less broken.” Helpful spirit. Missing a few steps.
On the volume side, this is not a backyard pool with a frog on the top step. The older reflecting pool held around 6.75 million gallons. After reconstruction, the working volume appears to be closer to 4 million gallons. Either way, that is a massive amount of water.
For perspective, turning over 4 million gallons would take roughly 2,800 gallons per minute for a 24 hour turnover, 1,400 gallons per minute for a 48 hour turnover, or 925 gallons per minute for a 72 hour turnover.
If it were still in the 6 to 7 million gallon range, that jumps to roughly 4,200 to 4,900 GPM for 24 hours, 2,100 to 2,400 GPM for 48 hours, or 1,400 to 1,600 GPM for 72 hours.
And that is just moving the water. It does not mean the water is filtered perfectly, treated perfectly, or mixed evenly. Large shallow water features can have dead spots, poor circulation, biofilm, sediment, and places where algae basically says, “Nice try, I live here now.”
Then there is horsepower. Depending on pipe size, filters, valves, friction loss, head pressure, pump efficiency, and system design, you could easily be talking about dozens to hundreds of horsepower across large pumps. This is not “go to the pool store and grab the blue bottle.” It is infrastructure.
Now let’s talk chemicals, because the comment section had everything from solid advice to “please don’t mix those unless you want the evening news involved.”
Chlorine, bleach, and pool shock are great tools when the goal is sanitation, especially in pools. They kill quickly and leave a measurable residual. But in a public ornamental water feature, you also have to think about people, birds, runoff, coatings, corrosion, byproducts, and public exposure.
Hydrogen peroxide is also an oxidizer. It can help with algae and organics, and it eventually breaks down into water and oxygen. That may be one reason it gets used where a chlorine residual is not wanted. But it is still serious chemistry, especially in stronger concentrations. “Breaks down into oxygen and water” does not mean “season with confidence.”
Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid. It is usually used to lower pH or deal with scale. It is not an algaecide. It is also not something you casually mix around chlorine unless your goal is to meet the fire department.
Algaecides can work, but they are not all the same. Some are copper based. Some are quat based. Some can stain. Some can foam. Some can be rough on aquatic life depending on dose and water conditions. Algaecide is a tool, not a magic spell.
UV, ozone, nanobubbles, and advanced oxidation can be useful when designed properly, but they only treat the water that actually passes through the system. If circulation is poor, they do not magically teleport into every dead spot. Sadly, algae has not agreed to stand in line for treatment.
Phosphate and nutrient control is the boring part, which usually means it matters. Algae needs food, light, warm water, and time. If you kill algae but leave behind dead algae, sediment, nutrients, and poor circulation, the water can go green again. That is not one bottle failing. That is the biology clock restarting.
Mechanical cleaning matters too. Brushing, vacuuming, filtering, backwashing, removing sludge, removing debris, cleaning lines, and improving circulation can be just as important as chemicals. Chemicals can kill algae. They do not neatly fold it up, bag it, and walk it to the dumpster.
Now, about the peeling paint comments. In the pool industry, we generally try not to “paint and pray” on submerged surfaces. Coatings under water are tricky. They can work, but the surface prep, product choice, cure time, moisture, chemistry, temperature, application thickness, and substrate all have to line up.
Could chemicals affect a coating? Yes. Could bad prep affect it? Yes. Could rushing water back onto it affect it? Yes. Could old substrate, moisture, or incompatible products affect it? Also yes. From a short clip, it is way too easy to say “the contractor messed up” or “that chemical caused it,” when the real answer could be twelve things wearing a trench coat.
Same with the pumps. Large pumps that run all the time do not always love being shut off and restarted. Bearings, seals, motors, valves, controls, and worn parts can be fine while running, then decide retirement sounds nice the second you shut them down.
And when something that size fails, you may not be getting a replacement by lunch. Big equipment can have lead times. Temporary pumping can require power, safety barriers, discharge plans, approvals, and people signing off before anything moves.
That brings us to the part nobody likes but everybody in commercial work understands: approvals.
On a public site, especially a historic or high visibility one, the contractor usually cannot just say, “I’ve got an idea,” grab a pump, dump chemistry, and start freestyling. Everything may need to be reviewed and approved.
That process exists for good reasons. It protects the public, the site, the contractor, and the agency in charge. But that same process can also slow down a fix while the water is busy turning into broccoli soup. Both things can be true.
So here’s the calm answer. We can laugh at it. It’s green. It looks wild. The jokes are going to happen. But none of us have enough information to fully crucify the people working on it.
The contractor may have done exactly what they were told to do. They may be waiting on approvals. They may be dealing with existing infrastructure, coating limitations, source water, algae blooms, pump problems, public access rules, or all of the above.
Could someone have dropped the ball? Sure. That happens too. But let the facts come out before lighting the torches.
If we were the contractor, we would be doing everything humanly possible to make it right and make it go away. Unfortunately, on work like this, you often cannot just act because you want to. You need the green light, and that process exists whether it helps or slows things down.
Water work will humble anybody. Pools, ponds, fountains, reflecting pools, splash pads, it does not matter. Eventually, water looks at your plan and says, “That’s cute.”
So yes, we joked. Yes, we probably should have made the original post a little more polished. No, we are not here to start a political fight over algae.
The better takeaway is this: green water is not automatically simple, clear water is not automatically safe, chemistry is not a substitute for circulation, circulation is not a substitute for filtration, filtration is not a substitute for maintenance, and maintenance is not always allowed to move faster than paperwork.
At the end of the day, we’re all just people trying to keep things from turning green, falling apart, leaking, peeling, clogging, foaming, staining, or becoming a comment section crime scene.
Be kind to each other. We’re all in this together.
Even the algae, apparently.
