Sadly, Addiction is like cancer... At some point & time, it will most likely touch your family... đŸ˜„ Don't be so quick to judge.. Love ❀ & Light 🔼

Before my sisters/brother/friends were junkies, they were your kid's best friend, captain of the football team, left wing on the soccer team, homecoming queen. By the time most people can admit they have a problem, they are already in handcuffs. There needs to be a change in the way people look at and treat addicts, its truly sad 🙁 I have been lucky enough to be able to keep a safe enough distance from he**in, but many people I grew up with were not so fortunate. Most of my friends got hooked on dope when they were 15, 16, and 17 years old. If you believe these people started out as thieves, junkies, and liars, then you simply have no heart. They were kids... Maybe even yours 🙁 I am writing these words on behalf of all my dead friends, the ones who are dying, and all the people who think their only purpose right now is to get high. I am writing for everyone in recovery who continues to be judged daily. I am using this opportunity to advocate for everyone I know and love who has been affected by he**in, the people who use it, and people like me who love someone who does 💕 I have seen this drug change so many people; it has changed me, and I have never even done it. It changed my whole hometown in the matter of a year & sadly the place I moved to too. It is like I woke up one day and all my friends were addicted to he**in. At first, no one thought it was a big deal; I remember people saying things like, “It’s just he**in” and “I could stop if I wanted to.” Finally, a year or so later, people wanted to stop, but no one knew how. No one knew what they were getting themselves into. And yes, we all took health class and got that lecture. IT BREAKS MY HEART knowing that people in my town have so little empathy for what is going on. This problem surrounds me daily. I have gotten accused of doing drugs because of the people I associate with lol but people forget that before they were junkies, they were your kid’s best friend, captain of the football team, left wing on the soccer team, homecoming queen. I grew up with these kids, played tag with them, and went to school with most of them for 12 years. I still picture my friend, the goofy, yellow-haired, awkward kid I knew in middle school, when I think about him robbing convenience stores at gunpoint for his next fix a few months back. I do not know why we dehumanize addicts the way we do, but we need to remember that they do not want to be that way, either. A life that may seem exciting at first soon becomes exhausting. I still chose to hang out with these people because I am one of their only sober friends left, because I am a good friend and a good person, and because I make the choice to see the good in other people. I have seen the desperation in my friends’ eyes when they talk about wanting to quit; it is the same look of desperation they have when they are throwing up in cold sweats asking for $10 to buy another bag and stop the pain.It is a seesaw effect, and the only way to stop it is to get them off the streets. Get real help. Not these half-ass halfway houses that people sneak drugs into, and not just Narcotics Anonymous meetings. (People sell drugs right outside those doors because they know people love getting high before and after.) There is alot of unnecessary stuff in the works, and that is sure to bring in more drugs, but no signs of a rehab or better yet, NO WHERE FOR OUR NEXT GENERATION TO GO, then you wonder why they get introuble? * * *THERE NEEDS to be a change. Imagine these were your children, (& I have 4) snatched up one day by the drug monster. Would you want to throw them in jail? Or would you remember their innocence and try to save them from what damage has not already been done? This whole thing is incredibly sad to me. I have seen some people get better because they were sent away to a rehab because when they got in trouble they were under 18. I have seen people get better and then relapse because of the lack of support and understanding in the community. Nothing messes with an addict’s recovery like the word “junkie.” That title is like a scarlet letter stamped on their forehead once they earn it. There needs to be a change in the way people look at and treat addicts, and it starts with the judicial system. By the time most people can admit they have a problem, they are already in handcuffs. They get out on probation, and it is just a matter of time before they go back to using because they do not know how to stop; they do not know how to cope or live at all. I have seen people do well and recover on their own, only to be too tempted when that first paycheck comes. I have seen people go to jail as addicts and come out as drug dealers to pay the court fees — not because they want to, but because for some reason society has made them believe it is their only option. How can you even get a job when you have the word “junkie” stamped across your forehead? THESE ARE NOT STORIES that I saw on TV or that I am making up. This is Real Life... These are my sisters, my brother, my friends’, families stories, the stories of children, the stories of people no one listens to because they are “no-good junkies.” My friends are not criminals; we are kids. Everyone, even functional adults, is just looking for an escape, whether it takes the form of a vacation, retail therapy, lighting up a joint, having a beer after work, or taking a cigarette break. To these kids, that escape was presented to them one day on a dollar bill, in a line, by someone they trusted: their mother, boyfriend, best friend. Then one day, in a needle. I am not saying to send these people off to a cushy facility; because their addiction did drive them to do some bad things that they should be held accountable for; but it is clear to me and should be clear to you that throwing people in a cell or “treating” them with drugs like methadone and suboxone (drugs that they sell on the streets as well) is not helping. These people have problems that go deeper than being a criminal, deeper than addiction. They are people trying to die but gripping onto life with everything they have because they are scared of everything. They are human. TREATMENT THAT works for some might not work for others. But one thing that always goes far is love, empathy, and compassion. I know that addicts have to want and work for sobriety, but sometimes people need to be shown that there is something worth working and living for beyond addiction. Most of the words I hear coming from people about addicts are not motivational. What hope do you expect a young person to have (who already has little self-confidence and is afraid of the world) when everyone is calling them worthless, criminals, junkies? I have seen too many people go through this. There is nothing that I could ever say to make my friends feel better when they think the whole world is looking at them like trash, like they deserve everything they have gone through and to be locked away to face their punishment. In some cases, this is true. Addiction can drive people to do crazy things. But should a young person really face punishment for something that may have not been in their control? As “normal” people, we think, how could they not realize what they are doing is wrong? The answer is they do, and they feel guilty about it every day. Without a reason or a way to stop, that guilt drives them to rob someone and pick up a needle instead of motivate them to move forward to sobriety. Just the other day, a beautiful 16-year-old girl told me she would have to die before she could stop. There needs to be help available before a child’s addiction reaches this low.I tell you these things from experience, from living in the same town you live in. I am the girl who hangs out with the hippies, the preppy kids, the ghetto kids; if you live around here I probably know your kids. Everyone has been affected by this drug. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, social class, or even the way you were raised. You need to stop and listen to what is going on if you want to save our community.

đŸ„ș Love You Always Jony 💓
Former teammates are learning to move forward without beloved lineman Jony Hunter.
Community: ‱ Sanford

Editor’s note: This story contains mentions of su***de and suicidal thoughts.

Jony Hunter spent a spring night on Wells Beach with one of his closest friends and teammates, listening to music, eating doughnuts.
The next night, the texts started to come in to friends and family.
“I love you so much, I’m so sorry, I promise this is for the best,” he told his mother.
As teenagers sometimes do, Hunter’s friends tracked his phone to the Piscataqua River Bridge that connects Maine to New Hampshire.
“There were cops surrounding the place and Jony’s car was there and I just broke down immediately on the side of the road,” Hunter’s friend Andrew Nickerson said.

His body was recovered the next day — just 10 days shy of his 17th birthday.
Months later, Hunter’s Sanford High School football teammates are learning how to move forward. The school opted not to have any official memorial or celebration of his life — its policy aims to treat any student death with “sensitivity and consistency” and mental health professionals often advise against formal school memorials when students die by su***de.
The team went through summer workouts preparing for a season that should have featured the nimble and athletic 6-foot, nearly 300-pound, two-way lineman.
He was their emotional leader, morale booster and arguably the Spartans’ best overall player, having earned second-team all-Class A honors on both offense and defense.
“He was such a big part (of) our team and all our friendships, and him being gone, 90% of our friendship is gone. It’s a huge hole,” said Perrin Shaw, one of Hunter’s classmates.

Todd Hildebrand came on in March as Sanford’s new head coach and has tried to help the team work through its grief.

“My whole thought after this happened back in May was to make sure I’m looking after these kids,” said Hildebrand, the father of a 9-year-old son. “They’re trying to navigate this as teenagers and there’s no way to really kind of navigate it, right? So at the end of the day it’s about being able to express how you feel.”
‘ALWAYS BRINGING EVERYBODY UP’
Most of Hunter’s friends said they had little or no idea that he was struggling with depression and seeing a therapist. His grandmother, Susan Spinney, said he was open with her about his feelings of anxiety, depression and lacking a sense of belonging. His mom, Amanda Spinney, acknowledged he had been taking medication.
“I know he knows how much he was loved, but when you struggle with depression and stuff, sometimes you can’t necessarily feel it,” Amanda Spinney said. “I hope he can feel it now.”
Data from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services shows approximately 28 people between the ages of 10 and 24 die by su***de in the state each year, about one-tenth of the statewide total.
The Maine Integrated Youth Survey found that 9% of high school students self-reported attempting su***de in the previous year. While girls are 2.5 times more likely to be hospitalized because of self-inflicted injuries, boys account for 89% of the deaths.
Hunter’s coaches and teammates said he consistently displayed the traits associated with leadership and being a good teammate. He knew his responsibilities on the field as well as everyone else’s. He worked hard in practice and the weight room. He was earning straight Bs in the classroom, Hildebrand said.

Most of all, if someone else was struggling in practice or looked like they were having a down day, Hunter was the person who would offer a helping hand or words of encouragement.

“I never met a bigger captain than Jony,” Nickerson said. “He was always bringing everybody up.”
Jayden Franco, a senior running back and defensive back, said he recognized that Hunter was down at times, but even then, he would take on the role of being the supportive friend.
“We definitely talked a lot about mental health but nothing like actually (choosing su***de) or anything,” Franco said. “We just talked about everything in life. He had stuff going on. I had stuff going on. We always talked about it.”
MEMORIAL SERVICE
Hunter had grown up in southern New Hampshire and moved to Sanford in 2021 ahead of his eighth-grade year. Football was his immediate entry path into the community.
At a private celebration of his life in late May at Sanford’s Memorial Gym, it was evident how football, community and his concern for others were important linchpins in the teen’s life.
“Jony’s parents know that if they need anything, this community will have open arms for them, just like they knew five years ago when they came to town,” said Mark Boissonneault, a former Sanford assistant and the varsity head coach in 2024. “That was one of the things that they always talked about to me, was how this community embraced Jony and just took him in as one of their own.

“He will sorely, sorely be missed,” Boissonneault said.
Posters adorned with photos of Hunter were taped up to the walls. Attendees were asked to write down a favorite memory.
“You were always there for everyone else when we should have been there for you,” one read. “You made everyone smile,” and “I pray your story impacts others and they are never alone,” said two others. Another said “I hope there’s an NFL in heaven.”
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
The team began formal preseason practices on Aug. 18, with the season opener scheduled for Sept. 4, at Biddeford.
At all times, the Sanford players said, they will try to emulate Hunter’s work ethic and his kindness.
“I think everyone on the team has something to play for. Every single one of us,” said teammate Brady Boissonneault. “No matter what happens, I think, Jony will be proud of every single one of us. As long as we are putting in the hard work and that’s what I do every single day.”
They want to honor their friend by encouraging people to have difficult, but important conversations about mental health. They want others to express how they’re feeling and listening to others.
“To get other people into the loop that it’s OK to talk to other people. Never to be scared to open up, even if it’s someone you don’t know entirely, or the closest friend that you have, or the closest relative, sibling,” Shaw said. “It’s great for other people to know what’s going on in your life.”
Nickerson hopes people learn that by being more open other premature deaths can be prevented.
“I just think, the person that loves you would rather you cry with them than cry at your grave,” he said. ” I think that’s a big part.”

I Cleaned All Day Today.
Literally. All day.

I folded laundry and washed dishes and picked up mismatched socks and stray Legos. I swept up eggs from breakfast and chicken nuggets from lunch.

I helped my daughter tidy her room and fold and put away her laundry and my sons organize the stacks of papers they brought home from school.

I barely sat down, and I'm pretty sure the afternoon cup of coffee I was looking forward to is still sitting on the Keurig tray.

But despite my efforts and the efforts of my kids (yes, I do require them to help), my house still looks like this.

No, this is not a "before" photo. It is a right now photo after the hours I spent cleaning—and I just wanna say this about it:

If you walk into a home that looks like this, don't assume someone hasn't been working her (or his) tail off to keep the place inhabitable.

Don't assume a cleaning schedule needs to be put in place, or that better habits need to be maintained.

Don't assume no one cares.

Instead, you can safely assume someone probably feels defeated and a bit like she's failing.

You can assume she's overwhelmed. Frustrated. Hopeless to the point where she's considered burning the place down and starting over somewhere new.

You can assume she's tired. Soooo dang tired.

You can assume she has a ton on her plate. That between her marriage, children, friendships, kid activities, career, and house, something will inevitably be neglected—and she's not going to let that something be her family.

You can assume she's trying really, really hard, but the force of life is more powerful than she is right now.

When you walk into a house that looks like this, comment on the sweetly drawn artwork hanging on the refrigerator. Tell her you love how her house feels full of life. Tell her you're grateful she welcomed you into her home. Then offer to watch her kids for a day so she can clean without tornadoes following closely behind (Kidding... Sort of.).

Mostly, just tell her she's doing a good job.

Because truthfully? The fact is she's probably been cleaning all day.

Unpopular opinion: Being a working mom is harder than being a stay-at-home.

And I say that as someone who’s lived both sides.

When I was home full-time, the days were long and loud. Diapers, dishes, meltdowns, routines—it was a constant loop of giving with little pause. The loneliness crept in, and the invisible weight of doing all the things without much recognition? That’s no small thing.

But clocking back into the workforce didn’t lighten the load—it just compressed it.

The same messes still waited at home. The same tiny humans still needed all of me. But now, my hours were split. The guilt showed up in boardrooms and on playgrounds. The hustle between daycare and deadlines. The pressure to be “on” everywhere, but feeling like I’m falling short in both worlds.

Truth is, neither path is easy.
Each comes with its own kind of tired, its own kind of sacrifice.

But from where I stand, the working mom juggle pulls me in more directions, faster than I can breathe.

To every mom—at home, at work, or doing a bit of both—
You’re doing holy, heart-wrenching, heroic work.
And you’re seen.
