When you reset a gravestone that's been lying in the dirt for decades and as you finish and step back to look at it, the sun comes out and hits it just right. It feels like a warm Thank You. ♥️

80 years ago Great Idea Guy:
I know what will fix it! Let's dig a great big hole and fill it with 400 lb of concrete and then set this base down right in there! It'll never move!

80 years of weather:
Earth moves. Stone moves.

Me today:
I'm never going to be able to get this stone right again! Curse you Great Idea Guy! 🤬

It's crazy that this monument hadn't already fallen over! To protect it and the public, we disassembled it and reassembled it at the foot of the grave. A new temporary foundation was built out of concrete block as the original base stone was locked in tight by tree roots. A notation was made on the burial record indicating the original location of the monument.
With Asher Abrahms, Simon Abrahms, and Richard Plackemeier.

Elmwood Cemetery board president Simon Abrahms and I made it our goal to reset this prominent and beautiful monument before Memorial Day. With his help and that of his son Zachary, board members Alison Paddock and Paul Benson, we did it! Cleaned and reset.

Come visit us this Memorial Day weekend and consider making a donation toward furthering our restoration efforts. We are a non-profit, all volunteer organization and every dollar makes a difference.

Little Pearlie F. Enggass died March 25, 1890 at the age of four. She was buried the next day. No cause of death given. I nearly tripped over her headstone as only 4" of it was above ground. Reset and Cleaned.

Little 11 year-old Daisy McCoy died on April 29th, 1883 and was buried the next day in Elmwood Cemetery. On October 17, 1889 she was moved about a quarter of a mile to the other side of the cemetery and reburied in this location. Reinterments were not uncommon and could happen for a variety of reasons. Happy to have caught her monument before it fell.

I've been looking forward to resetting this one all winter. It had been down for many years, and at approx. 600 lbs, it was only sinking deeper each year. Blocked it up on boards in March and started lifting last Monday. First lift got it stood upright and second lift put it in place. Then it got a D/2 cleaning. Charles Kolbe died 1888 from a gunshot. No other information.
