🇺🇸 This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave souls who gave everything for our country — fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, and brothers-in-arms who never made it back home.

Freedom has a cost, and this weekend we honor the heroes who paid that price with their lives. Their sacrifice is carried in the hearts of the families who still miss them every single day.

At R&I Pest Control, we will never forget the courage, love, and selflessness of our fallen heroes. May their memory live on forever.

✝️ “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” — Matthew 5:9

Please take a moment today to pray for the families of the fallen and to remember those who gave everything for this nation. 🇺🇸

With all this rain lately, termite swarm season is about to start.

If you see flying termites around your home, don’t ignore it — that usually means there’s a colony nearby or already in the structure.

We’re starting termite inspections and treatments now before the swarms really kick off. It’s a lot cheaper to prevent termites than repair termite damage later.

After the Rain: Why Pest Activity Often Increases 🌧️

This weekend’s rain changed ground conditions across North-Central Texas — and when soil conditions change, pest movement changes with it.

When the ground becomes saturated, especially in our clay-heavy soils, shallow ant tunnels and nests can become unstable. Oxygen levels drop, and colonies shift to drier, more stable areas.

In practical terms, that often means:

• Ants move upward or sideways
• Activity concentrates along foundations
• Trails appear along plumbing lines and slab edges
• Indoor sightings increase

The ants weren’t created by the rain. They were already established. The moisture simply redirected their movement.

The same pattern applies across other pest categories:

Rodents seek stable shelter when conditions outside fluctuate.
Roaches concentrate in protected interior voids.
Spiders follow insect movement toward dry, stable areas.

Weather events — whether cold, heat, or heavy rain — don’t eliminate pest pressure. They redistribute it and make existing access points more obvious.

This is why pest activity often appears to “start suddenly” after a rain event. In reality, changing ground conditions exposed a vulnerability that was already there.

Consistent protection and proper exclusion create stability, even when the weather doesn’t.

Pest control isn’t about reacting to what you see today. It’s about understanding how pests respond to changing conditions — and staying ahead of it.

Why Spiders and “Random Bugs” Show Up During Winter Weather Shifts 🕷️

During periods of cold weather followed by warmer days(like today), many insects and arthropods don’t disappear — they change where they spend their time.

Spiders, crickets, stink bugs, and other common “invader” pests are highly sensitive to temperature swings. When outdoor conditions become cold or unstable, they move toward sheltered areas like garages, attics, wall voids, and entry points around doors and windows.

Spiders, in particular, are following their food source. As smaller insects move indoors for warmth, spiders naturally gather in the same areas. This is why activity is often noticed near ceilings, corners, and light sources.

Most of these pests are not breeding aggressively indoors during winter. What homeowners are seeing is usually increased visibility, not a sudden infestation. Temperature shifts concentrate activity in predictable areas, making pests easier to notice.

That said, increased sightings often point to:
• Gaps around doors or windows
• Unsealed attic or garage access points
• Exterior lighting that attracts insects
• Changes in surrounding vegetation or moisture

Cold to warm snaps don’t create these pests — they highlight entry points and conditions that allow them inside.

Tomorrow, we’ll wrap up this series by explaining why consistent protection and exclusion matter more than the weather itself.

Why Ant Activity Often Spikes After a Freeze🐜

Cold weather doesn’t eliminate ant colonies — it changes their behavior.

When temperatures drop, ants retreat deeper into the soil or beneath concrete slabs where conditions are more stable. Foraging slows during freezes, which is why ants may seem to disappear for a short time.

When ice and snow melt, the ground can become temporarily saturated, especially in North-Central Texas soils. This moisture disrupts shallow tunnels and nests, forcing ants to shift movement upward or sideways in search of dry, stable ground.

As temperatures rebound, colonies resume foraging and often follow structural edges, plumbing lines, and slab penetrations — which is when ant trails suddenly appear indoors.

This freeze–thaw and ice-melt cycle is why homeowners commonly notice ant activity days after cold weather, not during it. The ants were already established; changing ground conditions simply pushed their movement into more visible areas.

Species common to our area, including odorous house ants, pavement ants, and fire ants, are well adapted to these conditions. Fire ant mounds may flatten during cold, wet weather and then re-form quickly once the ground stabilizes.

Cold weather doesn’t create ant problems — it reveals where colonies exist and how they’re accessing the structure.

Tomorrow, we’ll break down why spiders and other “invader” pests become more noticeable during winter temperature swings.

Why Roach Activity Often Increases After Cold Weather🪳

Cold weather doesn’t eliminate roaches — it changes where they live.

When temperatures drop, roaches move away from exposed outdoor areas and deeper into protected spaces. In homes, that usually means wall voids, cabinets, plumbing chases, and areas around appliances where warmth and moisture are present.

During freezes, roach activity may seem to slow down. But as daytime temperatures rebound into the 50s and 60s, roaches that sheltered indoors begin moving again. This is why many homeowners notice increased sightings after the cold passes, not during it.

Kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms are the most common areas for activity, especially near sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators, and laundry equipment. These spaces provide the moisture and warmth roaches need to survive year-round.

Even limited roach activity can matter. Roaches travel through drains, walls, and food-prep areas, spreading bacteria as they move and contaminating surfaces along the way.

Cold snaps don’t create roach problems — they concentrate them indoors and make existing issues more visible.

Tomorrow, we’ll break down how freeze–thaw cycles affect ant colonies and why ant trails often appear suddenly after a cold stretch.

Why Rodents Move Into Homes During Cold Snaps — and Why They Stay 🐭

When temperatures drop in North-Central Texas, rodents don’t hibernate and they don’t die off. They relocate.

Mice and rats spend most of the year outdoors along fence lines, brush, fields, and structures. A sudden cold snap forces them to look for consistent warmth and shelter, and homes become the most reliable option available.

Rodents enter through small gaps around foundations, utility lines, garages, and rooflines. Once inside, they don’t leave just because the weather warms back up. Attics, wall voids, and garages provide stable temperatures and nesting space that allow them to remain established.

Beyond the nuisance factor, even limited rodent activity can create real concerns. Rodents can contaminate surfaces and food areas through droppings and urine, introduce fleas and other parasites, and damage wiring or insulation as they nest and travel.

This is why homeowners often notice scratching sounds at night, droppings in garages or pantries, or sudden activity shortly after a freeze. In most cases, the cold weather didn’t cause the problem — it accelerated it.

Tomorrow, we’ll break down how cold weather affects roaches and why indoor activity often increases after temperatures rise again.
