TERMITES
Let's talk about one of the most destructive pests you can ever have the misfortune of encountering.
Termites are on the hook for an estimated 5 Billion dollars of discovered damage annually. They're small, easy to miss, and usually operate quietly behind the scenes. Specifically, we want to talk about the Subterranean termite, as it is what you have the chance of encountering in our area.
The subterranean termite is small, measuring only a few millimeters in length. it is commonly distinguished from the flying ant by the presence of a second set of wings, alongside the difference in length, a flying ant's wings are roughly the same size as their body, while a termite has wings spanning about twice their body length. Both species can produce a swarm.
Termites live in large colonies below ground. When members of the colony travel above ground, they produce shelter tubes to shield them from the outside world. These "mud tubes" are an easily distinguishable way to recognize of you have a previous or current issue that needs to be addressed.
The homeowner can utilize a few methods to aid in the prevention of subterranean termites:
Keep the soil around your foundation dry. This means diverting water from the side of the home with the appropriate drainage options available in your area.
Make sure wooden surfaces never come into contact with the soil around your home. build decks on concrete supports, make sure wooden siding or floor supports do not directly come into contact with the soil.
Remove dead wood from the yard.
Never stack firewood against the home.
Elimination of possible foundation moisture issues, along with the reduction of edible organic matter within the vicinity of the home are of the highest priority when trying to prevent the occurrence of a termite infestation.
There are multiple ways to treat an active infestation, including fumigation (Drywood termites), liquid application, and AI bait placement stations.
If you believe you have a current termite infestation, please contact your pest control company of choice to schedule an inspection, and go over treatment and preventative options.
