Took the whole Plumb-All crew to the W.B. Casey Water Resource Recovery Facility yesterday.
We work on the pipes that carry wastewater out of your home, but we wanted to understand what happens after that. How it gets screened, treated, and turned into usable resources like fertilizer.
We got to see the SCADA control room, the raw pump stations, the chemical feed systems, aeration basins, clarifiers: the whole process from raw sewage to clean discharge.
It's one thing to know how plumbing works. It's another to understand the full system your plumbing connects to. Days like this make us better at what we do.
Big thanks to the team at the facility for hosting us and walking us through everything.

🛠️🏠 Why You Should Schedule Regular Plumbing Inspections 🏠🛠️

Regular plumbing inspections are one of the smartest ways to protect your home—and your wallet. Catching small issues early can prevent major leaks, water damage, and costly emergency repairs.

✅ Benefits of routine plumbing inspections:

Detect hidden leaks before they spike your water bill

Prevent expensive water damage

Extend the lifespan of pipes, fixtures, and appliances

Reduce the risk of seasonal plumbing emergencies

Improve system efficiency, including septic performance

💡 Pro tips:

Know where your main water shut-off valve is

Keep water pressure between 50–60 PSI

Schedule septic inspections and pumping every 3–5 years

Preventive maintenance costs far less than emergency repairs—and offers peace of mind year-round.

🏠🔧 Understanding Your Home’s Plumbing System 🔧🏠

Knowing the basics of how your plumbing system works can help you catch small problems before they turn into expensive emergencies—and protect your home from water damage.

✅ Every homeowner should know:

Where the main water shut-off valve is

How to maintain proper water pressure (50–60 PSI)

Why drainage and venting matter

When to schedule inspections and pump septic systems

🚨 Watch for early warning signs like:

Slow drains or gurgling sounds

Running toilets or dripping faucets

Sudden spikes in your water bill

Musty odors or damp spots indicating hidden leaks

💡 Pro tip: Regular plumbing inspections and preventive maintenance can extend the life of your entire system—and save hundreds (or thousands) in repairs.

🚨💨 Sewer Smells in Your Home? Don’t Ignore Them. 💨🚨

That rotten-egg or sulfur-like odor isn’t just unpleasant—it can be dangerous. Sewer gas may contain hydrogen sulfide, methane, and ammonia, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and in extreme cases, become a fire or explosion risk.

⚠️ Common causes of sewer smells include:

Dry or empty P-traps letting gas escape

Loose vent or sewer pipe connections

Missing cleanout plugs

Failed wax rings under toilets

Sewer or septic pipe leaks

💡 Quick check:
If the smell is coming from a drain, run about ½ gallon of water into it. If the odor disappears, the P-trap was likely dry. If it doesn’t, there’s a bigger issue that needs professional attention.

📞 Call a plumber if:

Odors persist after running water

Smells come from multiple drains

You hear gurgling or notice slow drains

The odor is strong near toilets or floor drains

🚿💥 When Is Hydro Jetting Needed? 💥🚿

If slow drains, recurring clogs, or sewer backups keep coming back, basic drain cleaning may not be enough. That’s where hydro jetting comes in.

✅ Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water (up to 4,000 PSI) to completely clean the inside of your pipes—not just punch a hole through the clog.

💡 What hydro jetting can remove:

Grease, fats, and food buildup

Hair, soap scum, and mineral scale

Sand and debris

Tree roots invading sewer lines

🚨 You may need hydro jetting if:

Drains clog repeatedly

Sewer odors won’t go away

Multiple fixtures back up at once

Snaking only provides temporary relief

Unlike traditional methods, hydro jetting restores pipes to near-original condition and helps prevent future blockages—without harsh chemicals.

💧🚨 Do You Know Where Your Water Shut-Off Valve Is? 🚨💧

A small plumbing problem can turn into a major disaster fast—but one simple action can limit the damage: shutting off your water supply immediately.

✅ Your main water shut-off valve is often found:

Near the water meter

In the basement or crawl space

Along the foundation on the street-facing side

Outside near the property line or street

🔧 Shut-off valves usually look like:

A wheel handle (gate valve)

Or a lever handle that turns 90° (ball valve)

💡 Pro tip: Once you find your shut-off valve, label it and make sure everyone in your household knows where it is. Test it occasionally—stuck valves are common and dangerous during emergencies.

🏠💧 Does Home Insurance Cover Plumbing Problems? 💧🏠

The answer is yes… sometimes.
It depends on how the damage happens.

Sudden, unexpected water damage

Burst pipes

Plumbing failures that cause immediate damage

❌ Usually NOT covered:

Slow or long-term leaks

Damage from wear and tear

Regional flooding

Mold caused by neglected plumbing issues

💡 Example: If a washing machine suddenly overflows and damages your floors and ceiling, insurance may help cover the repairs—minus your deductible.

🚨 Pro tip: Regular plumbing maintenance and documentation can strengthen an insurance claim and help prevent denial.

🚽 When Is It Time for a New Toilet? 🚽

Your toilet may not be glamorous, but when it starts failing, it can waste water, raise your utility bills, and cause costly damage.

🚩 Signs it’s time to replace your toilet:

Frequent repairs for leaks or flushing issues

Cracks in the bowl or tank (even tiny ones matter)

Constant clogs that plunging can’t fix

Old models using 3.5–7 gallons per flush

Toilets over 15–20 years old

💡 Did you know?
Modern toilets use as little as 1.28 gallons per flush, offer stronger performance, and are easier to clean—saving water and money over time.

If repairs are adding up or your toilet is showing its age, replacement is often the smarter long-term solution.

🚽 Are “Flushable” Wipes Actually Safe to Flush? 🚽

Despite the label, flushable wipes cause nearly 50% of sewer blockages—and homeowners often pay $300–$500 to fix the damage. 😬

⚠️ Why they’re a plumbing problem:

They break down much slower than toilet paper

Many contain plastic fibers

The term “flushable” isn’t regulated

Multiple wipes combine into rope-like clogs called ragging

🚩 Warning signs of a wipe-related clog:

Gurgling toilets or drains

Slow drains throughout the house

Water backing up in the shower when flushing

Sewage odors from drains

💡 Pro tip: If you use wipes, throw them away—not down the toilet. A small trash can can save you from a major sewer backup.
