This is what happens when you go cheap, don’t prioritize cleanliness, don’t take your pest control operators recommendations seriously, and try it on your own.

Backstory. We were called to this restaurant several weeks back. It was infested with German roaches. We wrote and plan and detailed exactly what they needed to do prior to treatment.

We showed up early in the morning. Walls were moving. We were pumped and ready to go. But they were not. Open/exposed food, dirty dishes, areas not prepped and Germans everywhere. We did not treat.

We followed up 5 times on when they could complete prep work. They don’t get it done.

Then the health inspector shut them down. Thank God. They needed to be shut down for more than flies and roaches.

Now all of a sudden they comply with our requests. They tell us everything has been prepped. I swing by. Now the infestation is worse. We had to charge more. We scheduled the install.

Then we show up. They must have bombed the place with 50 bombs!!!!! For all my pest brothers and sisters out there, you know what time it is. The roaches and now in places they were not before (dining, behind more walls, in the drop ceiling etc). Bombing and self treating (especially in a commercial kitchen) is the worst thing you can do. Plus when we showed up you could smell it everywhere. We couldn’t even stay in there and treat.

Attempted to reschedule once more. Health inspector opened them back up. Now they are operating a commercial kitchen again in St John’s County and self-treating.

I’m not going to blast them but sometimes you wish you could for the safety of others!!!

This is a good one!!!

Got a call and was able to head out to client same day. Formosan (if you are a fellow bug nerd, you know these are bad) termites inside client’s home within just a few months of purchasing. Fortunately for the new homeowners, it appears the Formosan termites only swarmed to the home and a few of them got through the cracks between window and framing. We were able to get a baiting system installed the next day, along with pest control inside and out, as well as ongoing rodent control. More importantly, we gave them some sound advice for preventing unwanted guests that don’t pay rent!!!

1. Seal up entry points underneath with hardware cloth for all access points. Seal up gable vents. Seal up soffit returns since they have mature trees overhanging. The husband was handy and it saved him money, so I told him what to do and he did it.
2. We recommended an electrocutor in the backyard to be deployed during swarm season to deter Formosan and Eastern termite swarms from their home and to kill off a lot of the termite swarmers during swarm season.
3. We recommended them seal off windows and to install screens if they are going to continue to use windows.
4. We recommended them to use window coverings to not attract Formosan to the windows at night due to lights on side.
5. We recommended them not to keep exterior lights on at night during swarms season as well, so as to not attract Formosan termites.

Of course, we also got a 5 star review… Derrick is crushing it!!!!

Well… we were supposed to go fishing… for the 3rd time!!!

Good ol FL weather bummed out our offshore fishing trip once again. So, we pivoted. Still gave the guys the day off, invited them to lunch and drinks on the company (they all showed up), and rescheduled the trip again!!!

If it doesn’t work out next time, pretty sure we are going to take out our frustration at an indoor gun range!!!

Great food and fellowship. 2.5 hours of good times with the fellas!!

Rodent baiting and trapping update!!

We took on a LARGE rodent job a few weeks ago. We have already killed what we estimate to be a few hundred rats. Went from catching dozens (plus what died from poison) to catching 3, to catching 1, to now catching none.

Going to now recommend exclusion and ongoing maintenance!!!

Had to include this bad boy!! That’s a big roof rat!!!

One day haha!!!

But, we’ve got pocket microscopes so we can collect bugs in the field, identify small insects quickly, and make recommendations/treat accordingly!!!

Had two insects we collected same day that looked exactly identical to the naked eye, but they were too small to see what they were. One was from a warehouse and the other was from a residential client.

The one in the picture actually ended up being a merchant grain beetle. Notified client. They searched through rice product and was able to discard. Problem solved. Also educated them on inspecting incoming product and ensuring they are rotating stored product. These are key!!

The other one (in the container) was a red flour beetle. Found in home and in clients car. Made the recommendations of client to search for flour (and other stored product), discard infested product, and vacuum.

Inspection and identification are key. Once we have this, we can solve the problem and many times prevent moving forward.

I’ve heard so many stories of companies just treating and treating for stored product insects like this and the problem never goes away. If that’s you, call the experts at Crawford Pest Control!!!

How to tell the difference between drywood termites and subterranean termites. And what to do if you have drywood termites swarming.

We were called out for a termite swarm. This is one of those where you kinda already know what’s going on based on initial inspection of the structure and ongoing treatments and what you run into. We had previsuly found dryood frass in different areas of this historic B&B in downtown St Augustine. Nonetheless, instead of taking the easy way out, we went out and grabbed some samples. We got them under a microscope to just ensure the termites were not Formosans, since drywood and Formosan termite swarmers are both brown and can look alike. They were drywoods as expected. We made a recommendation and referral for them to contact a local fumigation company that specializes in that type of treatment. This is a multi-level parking garage. We treat the 20+ story tower on the Southbank of Jax, but not the parkinggarage.

Pretty sure I now hold a record…

Solely responsible for the shortest life ever lived by a handful of German roaches.

They literally hatched while I was performing treatment. Never had this one happen before in 15 years!!! Pretty cool stuff!!

I also killed the rest of the family and their entire lineage. Mafia style!!!

Little frustrating job here, but we got the customer taken care of.

Called at 3pm on Friday. My team is already gone for the day. Rental company in a panic. They have someone moving in same day and roaches everywhere.

I’ve already sent my guys home for the weekend and I’m certainly not calling them back out. Thankfully I was in my service vehicle. Left what I was doing and completed a heavy aerosol, dusting, and residual treatment to get a large initial kill to prevent new tenant from complaining. Scheduled folllow up baiting and residual with PM for new tenant.

This could have been prevented if we were notified earlier in the process. Mistakes happen though. We took care of the client and solved the problem. Happy new tenant equals happy customer!!!
